The Peer Hat is a space that invites and encourages all manner of original and innovative performers; a vibrant and welcoming live haunt that is rapidly becoming a Manchester must.
On the 29th August Peer Hat welcomes Salford Star Award winner Dominic Carlton Jones to a typically interesting and varied line-up.
2019 started well for Dominic Carlton Jones. He was announced as our Best Act and rightly received critical acclaim for his album Salford Punk Poetry Sadness Death New Life - if you are yet to hear it, we really can't recommend it enough.
A fans' favourite is his tribute to Mark E. Smith, Mark. It is a real celebration of an icon and features the playful lyric 'of course it sounds bad, that's the point lad'. Dominic discussed the impact of his win; "I think getting the award helped in securing me a place at this year's Foundations Festival. I think having that award next to your name is a factor in drawing people into my music and live sets."
Since the award, Dominic's played a few shows throughout the region including a performance at The Eagle Inn and a guest spot at Cuckoo Calling hosted by top Broughton poet Gordon Zola.
His next show at The Peer Hat promises to be a great, eclectic evening and the start of a busy period for the Salfordian singer... "Looking to build up more of a live presence, so I have established good links with Adrian at The Eagle and Nick at The Peer Hat."
The night will also feature Karl D'Silva who has an impressive CV, as a current member of noise/power electronics group The Vanishing, and with past performances alongside Thurston Moore, Damo Suzuki and Stephen Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire.
Cynthia's Periscope is an interesting act that was made in a petri-dish (or so I'm told, anyway). They are described as a lumpy elixir of folktronica, techno, post punk and lo-fi pop and a 'wonderful fusion of the melodic and the occasionally macabre, a tricky, trippy sound that nods towards the dance-floor'.
Voxish is on hand to offer physical electronica with a powerfully vocal lead and expressive visceral movement and delivery. Add to that Bobotronic, emerging from the wilds of Buxton with an entirely new kind of sound that is intriguingly billed as a fusion of classic rock and techno.
Dominic is also looking to add new material to his set-lists and possibly record new tracks in the near future..."I'm experimenting with some new songs but also bringing in Gail Skelly who used to sing with her own band Rubiyat on vocals" he explains "It's going to add lots and lots of sweet layers and wonderful harmonies to some of the more ballad-like epics that I write."
There's also likely to be a new tune on an upcoming German Shepherd Records charity album later in the year, "a song about rising up together in the face of adversity...an intense hypnotic song about finding yourself and your own creativity."
Dominic Carlton Jones is also appearing on Chris Perry's In The Spotlight show on 94.4FM Salford City Radio on Thursday 15th August between 8pm and 9 pm. It'll be worth tuning in to get Dominic's take on his live work and a truly great album.
