First published in 1892, The Yellow Wallpaper is seen as a seminal work of feminist literature which explores domestic issues such as the misdiagnosis of 'female hysteria' and its wider social and psychological implications.
This adaptation, being previewed tomorrow Monday 12th August at Footlights Theatre near Salford Media City, sets the story in the 1950s and presents it as a Greek Tragedy, complete with drama, movement and song.
"Stifled by domestic life, our protagonist is prescribed a rest cure by her physician husband to take place in the attic room of an isolated house, with the room's strange wallpaper soon becoming her sole source of mental stimulation" state Manchester-based students, Maya Fletcher-Smith and Eliza Nelson, who are staging the play before presenting it at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
This acclaimed performance draws on ancient dramatic techniques, including a Greek chorus of women creeping beneath the wallpaper's surface, and looks set be visually enthralling. Something completely different for a Monday night in Salford...
