Set in a Manchester community centre, four Caribbean pensioners have their world rocked when the Windrush scandal arrives at their doorstep. Both funny and hard hitting, The Community Centre, created by writer and actor Nicola Gardner, has had great reviews and is aiming to be transferred onto tv in the near future.
With a cast of eight, the happenings at the community centre will also prove, the blurb states, 'that we really can all live together as one extremely, strange but happy family...Fasten your comedy seat belts as they try to find answers to dis new problem!'.
"The Community Centre comedy show is far more than just wonderful entertainment" says Nicola "This ethnic minority theatre group are not afraid to highlight important social injustice. The show criticises Theresa May and Boris Johnson as it examines the effects of the Windrush scandal on BAME communities.
"The Conservative government's dreadful handling of the crisis will never be forgotten by the BAME community" she explains "As far back as Ancient Greece and Shakespearean drama, theatre has been a crucial channel by which playwrights and performers communicated important messages concerning social and political upheaval.
"The pensioners share funny and sometimes heart-breaking insight into the experience of Caribbean migrants and how they helped to shape the UK" she adds "Older black people are under-represented in mainstream. My aim is that people who come to see the show will leave with a much better tolerance of people different to themselves. This is a play about the importance of connecting with each other, regardless of age, sex, colour, race or nationality."
Tackling important issues, staging a dramatic vehicle for 'underused minority artists' and providing a bellyful of laughs while it's at it, The Community Centre looks like vital viewing...
The ingredients are writ large...'Pour in some African-Caribbean sauce, a pinch of Bob Marley, a shake of Afrobeat, season with a dash of youth, stir for an hour and serve up hot and spicy!'
