On Saturday 17th August there's a Peterloo Now! march and rally, where contingents from around Greater Manchester will make their way to Manchester Central for an event featuring music, song and spoken word (for details of 17th August event see previous Salford Star article click here).
On Sunday 18th August there's another march and rally commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre, this one organised by the Greater Manchester Trades Union Council (GMTUC).
There are two rallying points in Salford for this march from 11:30am one is at Queen Street, off Blackfriars Road, led by Salford TUC, with another at Peel Park, in front of Salford Museum and Art Gallery, led by Bolton Trades Council.
The marchers will meet other contingents from around Greater Manchester for a rally in Albert Square at 1pm with confirmed speakers including Matt Wrack, General Secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, Julie Ward, North West MEP, and Ian Hodson, President of the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers' Union.
"To mark the bicentenary of the massacre, the organisers of the Peterloo March for Democracy want to raise public awareness of what took place, and what the original marchers wanted to achieve" states GMTUC "They also want to encourage as widespread public debate as possible, on what political reforms ordinary people today might consider necessary to transform Britain's current far from democratic political system into something which genuinely reflects the interests of the many rather than the few..."
