Mike Leigh, director, writer and creator of films, plays and tv dramas, is to be honoured this Wednesday afternoon at a full meeting of Salford Council with the Freedom of the City of Salford.
Nominated by Councillor Steve Coen, the Higher Broughton screen legend has directed some of the most epic films of recent years, including Peterloo, Mr Turner and Vera Drake. Leigh has also created classic tv dramas like Abigail's Party, and films like Life is Sweet and Happy Go Lucky. He's even done a bit of acting along the way.
When the Salford Star interviewed Leigh on the red carpet at the premiere of Peterloo last year, he talked about the social implications of the movie... "The fact that it's our history is important, but also that it has resonances to now, it's relevant..."
That Mike Leigh should get this honour weeks before the 200th anniversary of Peterloo is very apt – as are the "resonances to the now..."
