TALKING ABOUT MY GENERATION

A new campaign has been launched to change views on how people think about ageing in Salford and beyond. What is it really like to grow older in Salford and Greater Manchester? A new project, Talking About My Generation, aims to smash stereotypes and give out some truths via a team of people over the age of fifty who will be hosting their own radio show, creating videos, writing news reports, poetry, photography, stage performances, podcasting and more to share stories and challenge myths.

It's an Ambition for Ageing project, with funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, and co-delivered with the support of PR social enterprise Yellow Jigsaw and Age UK...

"We are at risk of sounding like a broken record when we talk about the older generation. It is not all purple rinses, nylon dresses, rocking chairs and mumbles of 'back in my day" says Grace Dyke, from Yellow Jigsaw

"The Talking About My Generation Campaign is challenging these views and changing the record on growing older" she adds "Showing what this is really like for people in Salford and Greater Manchester as a whole by celebrating people's lives over the age of 50."

The Talking About My Generation Campaign will report on key issues for later life, from retirement and bereavement to staying active, championing over 50s' value in society, as well as highlighting challenges associated with ageing and how they are being overcome.

Chris Vickers, aged 67, who is helping lead the campaign in Salford, along with Paul Sherlock and Susan Mottram, says: "People should not be excluded on age, and I hope by sharing stories of older people in Salford, retirement can start to be viewed as a new beginning rather than an ending and people can be much more active and productive - whatever passion they may have."

Dave Haynes, Chief Executive of Age UK Salford, adds: "It is fantastic that the campaign is being run by people who themselves know what it is like to be over 50 in Salford. We hope each story will challenge misconceptions and stereotypes."

Well done. I welcome this action. Having now had an excellent interview at Brexit Party HQ I look forward to standing in 2020 Salford Mayoral contest to ensure all we older people are well represented.

Absolutely but one really bad example of some older and retired folk is what I saw yesterday at Manchester Central Library and the Peterloo circus. Well-retired folk filling in jobs that should go to younger people. Older people were arranging chairs for a play that was happening and directing people to their seats. These should be paid jobs for the many young people who want to get into the arts not time fillers for the time free and money saited generation.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO STOP THE STAR

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
