After hundreds of people packed a public meeting in April as members and local residents got wind that Bellway Homes was offering £30million for the site of Swinton Park Golf Club to build houses*, another public meeting has been called for 7pm Monday 8th July at Buile Hill High School.
This follows confirmation that Salford City Council has received a pre-application planning request for housing on the site. The meeting has been called by the Save Swinton Park Committee, which has already had meetings with solicitors and a barrister to take a legal case forward, with various courses of action proposed.
Meanwhile, Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, has sent an open letter to Swinton Park Golf Club "regarding the potential use of the site to develop residential accommodation".
Dennett quotes various Salford Council policies reiterating that the Golf Course is not included in land earmarked for housing, explaining that on this site "development will not be permitted unless...it has been clearly demonstrated that the site is surplus to recreational requirements, and the development would facilitate the wider regeneration of the local area"...
He adds that "such evidence has not been presented to the City Council thus far, and as such the City Council's starting position in the event of any potential sale for development is that the land should remain as recreational/leisure space..."
