Local raconteur Tony Flynn has written loads of books and articles on Salford history, and on Sunday 30th June he's leading a very special walk around Eccles to raise money for the Mustard Tree weekend foodbank.
After meeting up at Eccles Train Station at 1pm Tony will take people on a wild waltz through the town's past, taking in the streets, monuments and pubs, as a zillion anecdotes get regaled, covering everything from ladies of the night, to arsenic contaminated beer, those oblig Eccles cakes, Fred Engels, train disasters and more...
"Howzabout the world's first railway casualty, an MP for Liverpool no less, killed by the Rocket and his body was brought to Eccles where a coffin was made for him by a local pub landlord" says Tony "Chuck into this mix you will learn about murders, suicides, mystery tunnels, graveyards, the Lusitania Riots of 1915, foul mouthed mynah birds, Eccles racecourse, the millionaire born in an Eccles pub... hang on, you just come along and learn about it!
"If all goes well I may even hold a quiz in a local pub with prizes" he adds "I will be charging £3, which is only the price of a pint in some pubs, and this walk will last for two hours so do the maths; we shall also have a pint in two, possibly three, pubs in the name of research and refreshment only. Finally every penny raised will go towards buying food from local shops for the Mustard Tree foodbank, so give generously, you know it makes sense!"
This Eccles Walk and Tony are certainly not to be missed for a top afternoon's cultural entertainment...
