A new report published last week by BankTrack revealed that Barclays is the worst bank in Europe for financing fossil fuel projects, putting $85billion into fossil fuels between 2016 and 2018, including support for corporations pushing ahead the plans to develop the fracking industry.
Tomorrow morning, Saturday 25th May, between 11am and 2pm, Extinction Rebellion is to protest outside Barclays on Market Street to pressure the bank into dropping its investments in the fossil fuel industry.
It's part of a nationwide campaign that will happen at the same time in other towns and cities across the UK, supported by both Extinction Rebellion and Momentum, and follows today's international Youth Strike 4 Climate.
Indeed, members of the new Extinction Rebellion Youth will join the Manchester action..."Following action this week at Manchester University and the school strikes, newly formed XR Manchester Youth will be joining Momentum and others to protest against Barclays bank investments" says Oscar from XR Youth.
"For many of our group this is the busiest time of the year, laiden with exams" he adds "Our presence shows how committed our members are in the fight against climate breakdown."
Parliament has recently declared a Climate Emergency, and this action by Extinction Rebellion aims to drive home the message..."It's institutions like Barclays that make the ecologically impossible financially viable" says Joe Lansley of Extinction Rebellion "Making the strings directing climate breakdown visible is a vital step towards cutting them."
