After the Eccles Saving People Shelter was evicted nine days ago*, homeless residents occupied an old nursing home in Swinton and set up a new refuge**
Trafford Housing Trust, which owns the Swinton home, issued a statement to the Salford Star explaining that "The last thing we want is for people to be left without a place to stay", but added that it had a "genuine concern for the safety of those in the building".
The Trust explained that it would assist homeless people in the Shelter to "have the help they need to find and stay in a home", although it did serve possession orders on the building, with the case due in court this morning.
Angela Barratt, of Salford Street Support, says that her support organisation will not be contesting the case...
"Trafford Housing has put an action plan in place and has sent letters asking residents to go for assessments to get accommodation" she explains "We have been negotiating for two days with solicitors, the Trust and Salford Council, and everyone in the building is going to be offered accommodation; no-one is being thrown back on the streets.
"As support workers we think it's the best outcome for everybody" she adds "We've done all we can, and Trafford Housing has said they will accommodate everyone. It's a positive outcome..."
