Pearl Divers are a genuine tour-de-force and have an eclectic sound that draws inspiration from local legends, film scores, funk and much more. I caught up with Carl, the band's guitar playing singer and songwriter, who discussed his broad range of visceral influences...
"I like most of the big Manc bands - don't care what people say: Oasis, Roses, Happy Mondays, Smiths" he explained "I like a tune and I prefer less of the downer stuff, more positive, upbeat music. John Barry is a bit of an influence I suppose, Nile Rogers-love that stuff. I like a bit of the jazz influence thrown in..."
When it comes to performance Pearl Divers keep it classy. There is a confident Northern swagger, but it is fused with a wide variety of other sounds. It separates them from other acts that are happy to replicate previous bands. Pearl Divers are a one-off but remain accessible. Audiences will be seduced by their unique approach and musicianship.
"Our sound is like all over the show" said Carl "We have a couple of Bond themes, a prog track and few Manc style anthems. Strong melodies, simple verse chorus stuff with some jazzy harmony here and there."
Pearl Divers are an original band steadily growing in reputation. Their sets promise a blend of styles and well-crafted tunes. It's also a great chance to catch the uniquely brilliant Dominic Carlton Jones, current winner of the Salford Star's Best Act Award. His album Salford Punk Poetry Sadness Death New Life was an absolute triumph. As the title suggests, Dominic used highly personal subject matter to construct a beautiful, moving and heartfelt album. In short, if there was a better album last year, we must have missed it.
