INDEPENDENTS STORM IRLAM IN SALFORD CITY ELECTION

Star date: 3rd May 2019 LABOUR LOSES IRLAM TO INDEPENDENT BUT SCRAPE CADISHEAD Independents Alliance candidate, Darren Goulden, took the Labour Party seat of Irlam with a majority of 125 at last night's Salford Council local election, but Labour scraped Cadishead with its candidate, Lewis Nelson, elected with a majority of just 64 over Independent Dave Pike. While Irlam was the only seat that changed hands, it was also a good night for UKIP and the Green Party, while Independent Alliance candidate, Carol Boyce, came second in Swinton South, cutting the Labour Party majority to 250. On another staggeringly low turnout in the Salford local election of just 26.15%, the Labour Party managed to hold onto most of its seats, with just Irlam changing hands to the Independents Alliance. Independent candidate Darren Goulden was elected in Irlam with a 125 majority over the Labour Party's Peter Taylor. The pattern was almost repeated in Cadishead but Lewis Nelson just managed to hold the seat for Labour with a majority of 64 over Independent, Dave Pike... "We were about 160 votes short last year and we've worked really hard for twelve months so there was more expectation this year; second wasn't really an option" Darren told the Salford Star "Unfortunately for Dave, he's failed by 64 votes but he's been a rock for me. The big Labour machine threw every resource at Dave in Cadishead and we've battled away and stood up to it – I think he'll come back next year." As the first Independent Alliance elected councillor, Darren says he will represent the community as best he can... "I can just promise people hard work and honesty; it's a massive learning curve for me and I'm looking for people to help me" he added "I'm just a DJ by trade and a festival organiser but we've worked really hard and I think it's a fabulous win. I'm utterly proud. I was born and bred in Irlam and when I went door to door I never had one person say anything bad to me or ask a question that I couldn't answer. Obviously the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework was a big issue but we've been doing this since 2016." Elsewhere, Labour won back seats where standing councillors had resigned the whip. In Weaste and Seedley, the Labour Party's Madeline Wade won with 1,006 votes, while former Labour councillor, Paul Wilson, standing for the Independents Alliance, polled 303 votes. And in Swinton South, Jim Cammell won for Labour, although he was run close by Independents Alliance candidate Carol Boyce, who polled 565 votes cutting the majority to 250. "I think I did really well, and there's a reason for that, in that all the Independents brought to the table some heart in politics, where you felt we really cared about what people were saying; we understand where they're coming from and there's a perception that we'll do something about it" she said, declaring that "The same old business as usual is over now. I think the future is rosy for Independents." Elsewhere, UKIP came back from the dead via the Brexit factor, attaining second place in nine of the 19 seats up for election, while the Salford Green Party increased its vote, coming second in Irwell Riverside and Ordsall and beating the LibDems in all wards where the failing party stood. Meanwhile, Kersal saw the continuing collapse of the once safe Labour Party vote, with the Conservative Party's Arnie Saunders receiving over double the Labour vote and now holding a majority of 785. The lowest turnout in the city was in Ordsall with 19.62%, closely followed by Little Hulton with 19.7%, and Langworthy with 20.33%. The highest turnout was in Worsley with 35.71%, followed by Boothstown and Ellenbrook with 34.94%. All elected councillors won't have long to reign as every seat in Salford is to be contested next year, 2020, complete with boundary changes. | Next year with the whole council up for re-election I can see Salford going no overall control if the independents win most of the seats especially Swinton,Eccles,Irlam and Walkden Worsley and Boothstown/Ellenbrook would be Conservative as usual with Labour retaining the inner Salford wards and the Jewish community ward of Kersal going Conservative |

Labour councils are legendary for litter strewn streets. Trust me, Trafford will go down the path of least resistance very soon. And by that I mean litter strewn streets and, in all likelihood, luxury high-rises springing up all over Trafford, what with them having a "new" Labour council this is a given ... and you can betcha bottom dollar that the developers won't be paying much in the way of planning fees etc. Trust me Ray, Labour DOESN'T WORK. Fact is a Labour council is usually so bad for its citizens, that it should probably be claiming Incapacity Benefit.

| Independents on the march. Indies won in Horwich, Blackrod, Atherton, Farnworth , Kearsley , Failsworth and now Irlam. I can't believe it's taken this long for locals in Irlam to work out that this is the best way forward for them. Salford Council will always treat Irlam, and Cadishead for that matter, like the back of beyond.Now with the assault on the green belt a vote for the Labour Party in these wards is just a vote for the destruction of their environment. Party affiliations are a waste of time in places like this. Irlam needs Irlam first representation because when push comes to shove Salford Council will sell them down the ship canal. |

| John Malone could be in for a big shock. Unlike the vast majority of the extreme left, Madeline Wade is an oddity. She is what you call "houseproud", very. She will not stand for filth and squalor. If any good at all can be gained from her election, she should be put in charge of refuse collection and street sweeping. My god , she would kick some arses there, and I for one would be right behind her, for a change. With labour elected over the ship canal, if she got stuck in ,we could end up with cleaner streets than Trafford. |

| I agree with Rossi,and thank once again Mary and Joe for trying. The victory in Irlam shows a beacon of hope. With regards to Trafford. Rossi does miss one vital thing. Grammar schools. The Trafford Tories used to love them despite Mrs Thatcher closing down more of these than she closed coalmines. Labour like getting rid of these so called elitest schools.This is why state education has gone to pot in our country, and why we half to put up with the XXXX wits of the public school system running the country, no matter which party they are in. Even old mother Abbotts kids went to private school, things are so bad with london state education.Grammar schools are like capital punishment, once they are abolished ,they are never brought back . No doubt it will not be long if the tories behave themselves and labour make a balls of things like they always do,that Trafford will return to Tory rule, but by then, it will be too late, the grammar schools will be gone.
I admit this is a great victory for labour in Trafford,I bet the bolsheviks there are over the moon with joy. Oh just thought as well, that policy Trafford used to have of sending asylum seekers over the ship canal. That will stop now, the Trafford bolshies will need all the labour voters they can muster to keep their ill gotten gains. While I am on about Bolsheviks, I don't honestly know if it is a good thing or bad thing that former communist party member Madeline Wade has been elected for Weaste. She once campained about 30 odds years ago for her husband the commie candidate in the same seat. It's a shame Paul Wilson didn't get elected. I do not know him , but I know people who do . and he is said to be a good guy. I think we will be hearing more about MS Wade. She is very opinionated and cannot keep her trap shut. Like I said before, she will stand no nonsense or jiggery pokery from the ruling mob. I can see a clash of personalities with the old guard. She will cause more problems at our town hall than Mrs Thatcher ever could if she had been a councilor here. I can hardly wait! |

| I see that Trafford Council has regrettably gone over to Labour. I wonder how long it will be before the tree-lined pavements and boulevards of Trafford resemble a Moon-scape, and the streets and alleyways are festooned with detritus. Crisp packets blown by the wind, used condoms and - and plastic bags full of rotting rubbish. I don't think that it will be long.
Congratulations to fellow neighbour Seamus Martin coming second to Gina Reynolds in Langworthy. Condolences to Mary and Joe. They tried, and nobody can do more than that. But remember people, an Independent won in Irlam - so there is some hope out there. After all, anything's got to be better than Labour. |
