Every year, Salford trade unionists gather a week before the official International Workers Memorial Day to remember those who lost their lives working in the Irwell Valley mines.
Today, at the Agecroft Colliery memorial on Agecroft Road, the names of those who died were read out and a minute's silence held...
"The reason we are here today is to remember the miners who made us the modern world, who gave us the world that we live in today, and to remember the memory of the Agecroft miners and the miners of the Irwell Valley" said Salford TUC's Paul Kelly who was joined by Hilda Palmer of GM Hazards and former Agecroft workers, including Ivor Kelly and Ken, who worked at Agecroft for thirty years..."It was a great job and I'm proud to be here" he said.
Meanwhile, campaigners, trade unionists and politicians will meet on Workers Memorial Day, Sunday 28th April, from noon until 1pm at Albert Square in Manchester, where wreaths will be laid and a short play performed called Exposed to dangerous substances at work? Use the COSHH- that's the way to do it....
