SWINTON GOLF CLUB DENIES ANY SALE TAKEN PLACE FOR HOUSE BUILDING

Star date: 16th April 2019 DESPITE SPECULATION SWINTON GOLF CLUB INSISTS IT HAS NOT BEEN SOLD As rumours circulate on social media that Swinton Golf Club has been sold to developer Bellway Homes for around £30million, this morning management of the company told the Salford Star that "It's not been sold, there's a lot of Chinese whispers going about at the moment..." Meanwhile, Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, has written to the club, expressing his "disappointment...that the future of the Club is in real doubt", and stating that he has been made aware that "a house builder is seeking information about the planning status of the site". A source told the Star that, at a recent meeting, twenty investors approved the sale, subject to planning permission. Full details here...

Swinton Park Golf and Country Club, sited next to the East Lancs Road, is currently at the centre of speculation that the land has been sold to developer Bellway Homes for around £30million, subject to planning permission being granted. Land Registry details do not show any current sale, but the Club did change hands on 4th May 2017 for £884,191 to Swinton Park Golf and Country Club 2017 Ltd. The previous company, Swinton Park Golf Club Ltd was dissolved via 'voluntary strike off' in January this year. A source told the Salford Star that a recent meeting of the new company approved a sale to Bellway, with twenty investors voting in favour of the deal. However, this morning, management at the Club denied any sale had taken place... "It's not been sold, there's a lot of Chinese whispers going about at the moment and we're dealing with a lot of it" said the Food and Beverage Manager "As far as I'm concerned, and I've got the Accounts Manager with me, the club has not been sold. We've not been told anything." A letter dated yesterday was sent by Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, to Swinton Park Golf Club explaining that it has been brought to his attention that "consideration is being given by the owners of the golf club to selling your course and club-house to a house builder...". Dennett adds that he has been made aware that "a house-builder is seeking information about the planning status of the site", adding that it is "very disappointing to hear that the future of the Club is in real doubt." He explains that the site is not listed for development in any of Salford City Council's planning policies and that "the City's starting position will be that that this well-established golf course should remain as a golf course..." Meanwhile, a Save Swinton Park public meeting has already been arranged at St Luke's School Hall on Swinton Park Road next Tuesday 23rd April at 7.30pm.
Update: 17th April: An Official Members Update has now been released by Swinton Golf and Country Club, headlined that the 'Club Has Not Been Sold'... "You were made aware in December 2018 that the Club had received an unsolicited offer from Peel Holdings to buy the golf course. This offer was rejected by the Board. Our decision to reject this offer was ratified by the investors. At this meeting it was proposed and seconded that should the Club be approached by other third parties interested in purchasing the Club, any such offers should be pursued and brought to the investors attention. "Subsequently we were approached by a number of developers interested in the purchase of the golf club. It was the legal duty of the Directors to bring these offers to the attention of investors. At the Investors Meeting held on 4th April, all the offers were discussed. A significant majority of the investors attending this meeting voted in favour of pursuing one of the offers made. "The decision was not taken lightly. After significant expenditure on the course and clubhouse over the last two years, we are still operating at a financial loss. This state of affairs cannot continue ad infinitum..."

| I will try again to explain about our elected members being seen around the ward. We dont see them very often, if ever. They do pop up at election time with yellow jackets, litter pick up stick thing, and they make sure there is a person with a camera to take the annual " Look I busy I am " picture |

| In answer to the developers forum quote about another golf course being built in the Bolton area .That is around 10 miles away from Swinton park as I know the site well , on newbrook road. A golf course in Bolton regardless of its standard will have zero bearing on a golfing facility in salford !! |

Swinton park golf club members and social member alike are 95% working and retied working class people who enjoy golf and also socializing in a nice and relaxed environment
Obviously bob hasnt been in there any made an assumption that all golf clubs are the same there not
Duchan mathersons playing fieldsis hardly used to its full potential and there are other playing fields close by

| Mary, actually I apologise for the comment, and got a case of keyboard rage, but at something else, so it was wrong of me then to make the remark about you being self serving. I may not agree with everything you say, but that’s life, but I also see you as one of the few in Salford who actually do take a stand for the city and try to make change. I am a labour member but I don’t follow blindly, I see they have faults like everyone else, and actually we do need more independents in the city, and in another thread I actually wished you and all the other independent candidates all the best in the election, and so I retract my last childish comments and wish you well. That said, I do feel that there are a growing number of decent labour councillors in the city, who are speaking out, and I see the same in Manchester. There are a lot of the ‘old guard’ who have been around far too long and amassed to much power and even though it goes against party membership, I do wish they would either be replaced by a new breed of community driven labour councillors unafraid to speak out, or by independents. |

I live in this area,most of my family live in Claremont, I care about where I live,what's wrong with that. Self serving opportunist,can't help the fact I care about the place of my birth, I want a better place for my grandchildren to up in, is that so wrong.

If this golf club becomes houses their is a new championship golf course being built not to far away in Over Hulton owned by Peel Holdings.

| One think I can't understand why the Mayor has gone public with this letter he has sent to the owners. And why has the ward councillors for Claremont gone on social media. We know there are elections coming up. But I think they are protesting a bit too much for my liking. Plus this has been out there in the big bad world for a few weeks. All very odd. |

| Actually the members of the golf club are NOT in favour of selling the golf club .Just the 28 shareholders .As for the brickie who worked his way up ?? He purported to be investing in the golf club in order to save it , and not to sell it to developers to boost his already bulging bank balance of many millions. It's a great golf club that's a great recreational and sporting facility for salford with many local people who use the club as social members too .Now these facts have been established I will conclude by saying ..." long may this great golf club remain " . |

| As a member of this club for about 46yrs it will be
a shame if the greed of the current owners results
in the closure of this facility both for its golfers
and many social members.Traffic in the area is horrific at the best of times and development of a
site of this size would greatly exacerbate the problem.Since the closure of several pubs in the area locals have joined the club in many numbers and
they would undoubtedly feel the loss also.

| It hasn't been sold. Almost certainly correct.
But that doesn't mean that the 'investors' have not decided to and made plans to sell it, and will do so once planning consent is obtained.
£29m profit for the investors will be a major attraction. |

| I can just imagine it now at the 19th hole of the Great Elysium Golf club.Denis Thatcher and his pal Bill Deedes raising their G and T's to salute the new champion and defender of golf clubs Dennett. How strange does this seem to the working class labour voter? Right next to this land, it is being proposed that football playing fields where my mates used to kick balls about, are built on, while here,where mainly tory voting people play golf,Dennett speaks out against development. If one site has to be built on, why not the golf club? At least the members who own it and use it seem to be in favour. Can it not be, the reason the council are against this, is because they stand to make a lot of money from the Dunan Matheson site? If the golf club gets developed instead, most of that lot of money will be made by a former Salford brickie ,a lad who started with nothing and made his fortune by sheer hard graft, not like our politicians who sit on their fat arses and get well paid for wasting our money. Nice move golf club lads, I like your timing. |
