Following the Boxing Day Flood of 2015, thousands of pounds were collected for victims of the torrent – but no-one could agree on the best way to get the money to them. Instead, in August 2017, it was decided to install a £10,000 community flood warning board with the funds, to benefit as many people as possible should a similar scenario occur again.*
This week, the board has finally been installed on the edge of Mocha Parade, and is due to be fully functional within days. The Lower Broughton Community Screen, run by the Broughton Trust, will not only flash up flood warnings and alerts direct from the Environment Agency when necessary but will also give out information on community events, health issues and locally run courses.
People will also be able to advertise birthdays or businesses on it, although there will be a small charge to pay for things like insurance and maintenance.
"We want it to be a point of information for people" says Mike Thorpe from the Broughton Trust "Over the next few days we'll be training on it and then it will be up and running for community use."
