Afterlifes, a new exhibition by Hannah Farrell, opened at Caustic Coastal gallery this week and runs until 27th April.
Slapped over three spaces, upstairs and downstairs in the cavernous galleries, the show whacks everyday images of slogans, people and places on walls, huge blue canvas backdrops and open sets, using bulldog clips and masking tape, alongside little holes cut out to see behind the 'scenes'.
Some of the images are ripped and reconstructed within other photos, while others are set up especially for the exhibition. There's also a rather neat 3-D hologram style shapey thing going off within a booth downstairs.
The blurb states that Afterlifes is "an exploration of 'image' in three parts...Image as fantasy, image as after image, double exposure made physical, rooms as 'images', temporary architecture and the exhibition build as a backdrop, and the unease that comes with rendering these images..."
But does it elicit a positive or negative or neutral response? Go along, see for yourself and judge. As always with Caustic Coastal, it's something completely different...
