A new book by top local historian, Michael Herbert, tells the stories of women who campaigned for social change and progress.
Manchester's Radical Women 1914 to 1945 is subtitled 'For The Sake of Women Who Are To Come After' and includes those who campaigned during the First World war for a just and lasting peace that would prevent another war, supported miners and their families during the Miners' Lockout in 1926, marched from the north to London on Hunger Marches in the 1930s and went to Spain to serve as nurses during the Spanish Civil War. It also discusses the role of women workers during the Second World war in the Lancashire Women's Parliament.
The book launches next Saturday 6th April at Three Minute Theatre with a free event that sees local actress Zoe Iqbal read extracts from it, and is published on 8th April by The Mary Quaile Club which organises events and meetings on radical history.
