OVER ONE THOUSAND YOUNG CLIMATE STRIKERS CONVERGE ON MANCHESTER

Star date: 15th March 2019

GLOBAL WARNING...PLANET EMERGENCY!!!

Over one thousand young people, some in school uniform and most carrying home-made placards, attended today's Global Youth Strike for Climate rally in St Peter's Square, Manchester.

"It's absolutely brilliant that so many young people have turned out today to support their planet because at the end of the day it's these people who have to live with the consequences of what our generation have done; so I'm proud of them" said Jo, a Salford mum who attended the rally.

Hundreds and hundreds of home-made placards, both scrawled and beautifully composed, gave out the message that young people will not tolerate the destruction of the planet by climate change...'Stop denying our earth is dying'... 'Planet before profit'... 'Global warming isn't cool...'

Well over one thousand school kids, students and workers packed St Peter's Square, cheering speaker after speaker who all called for older politicians and business people to get their heads out of the sand, to stop doing tokenistic gestures and to start doing something proper to stop climate change destruction.

Salford University student, Ben Day, who had earlier told the Salford Star that he was trying to prevent "potential societal collapse within my lifetime" was there with a banner reading 'Be on the right side of history – or be at the end of history'.

Meanwhile, Jo, a Salford mum who attended to see how widespread the support for the movement was, added: "I have to say it's absolutely brilliant that so many young people have turned out today to support their planet because at the end of the day it's these people who have to live with the consequences of what our generation have done; so I'm proud of them".

In under two weeks, Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, will be holding a summit around a carbon neutrality target of 2038. Judging by today's action, the young people of Greater Manchester want urgent action way before then. As one of the placards stated, this is a 'Planet Emergency...with No Planet B!'

I speak from experience Brian. Most eco-types are proponents of the 'do as I say, not as I do' approach to saving the planet and I see no reason why today's youngsters will be any different when they grow up.

Pete, how on earth do YOU know what these kids will do when they grow up? They are obviously much more aware of the potential environmental disaster ahead of us, than earlier generations. Don't dismiss them so easily, man!

Those kids will probably all be driving, flying and consuming as much as anyone else when they grow up. Eco-evangelists are mostly reasonably affluent middle class people who make little or no attempt to restrict their own CO2 footprints while telling everyone else to do so.

I went to support these great children today, who seem wiser than some adults. Whilst they have their eyes wide open many adults, even those with power, have their heads in the sand. The speeches from these children, some as young as eight, were knowledgable and delivered with confidence and genuine sincerity, I was so proud of them and glad they have parents who supported their action. They give me hope for my grand children’s future. THANK YOU ALL. As a teacher I endorse your action.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
