Next Saturday, 16th February, there's going to be a big public event at Samuel Charles Hair Salon in Walkden where 19 year old Courtney Davies is having between seven and twelve inches of hair cut off which will be sent to the Little Princess Trust charity that makes free wigs for cancer sufferers under the age of 24. Courtney is also hoping to raise £1,000 for the charity, via Just Giving donations.*
It's a remarkable story because you'd think that Courtney, who was born with cerebral palsy and is a wheelchair user, had enough problems of her own without thinking of others.
"I'm always looking for some ways to raise money, and I can't run a marathon, and I can't do a skydive, so I thought I'd do this" she says "I lost my great gran about a month ago to cancer, so I thought I'd have some of my hair cut off for young cancer patients."
Dad, Vince, jokes that it will be easier to comb Courtney's hair in the morning and that he'll buy her a hat, but is immensely proud of his daughter... "She's got her own difficulties but is always looking to raise money for others and this is a suitable charity" he says "They take human hair and make it into wigs for children and young adults undergoing cancer treatments."
Meanwhile Courtney, who is an amazing role model for young people, is, kind of, looking forward to the event..."I'm slightly nervous" she admits "but I know it's for a good cause..."
