This afternoon's announcement from BAFTA says it all really..."We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Albert Finney. The recipient of the BAFTA Fellowship in 2001, Finney will be warmly remembered for his powerful performances in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, Tom Jones, Big Fish and many more. Albert Finney has passed away at the age of 82."
Albert Finney was one of Salford's greatest ever actors, who never forgot his roots and never played on his fame, despite starring in a popcorn bucket full of household name films, from Saturday Night Sunday Morning to Erin Brockovich to Tom Jones, as well as appearing on stage with the National Theatre and in numerous tv dramas, including Dennis Potter's Karaoke and Cold Lazarus in the 1990s.
When the first Salford Film Festival was created in 2005, Albert Finney was one of the first to back it, wishing it well and passing on a message to Salfordians... "Give my regards to Broad Street..."
Despite trying every single year when the Salford Star was in print, Albert Finney just wouldn't do an interview. Indeed, any interviews with the Salford legend were incredibly rare..."My job is acting, and that is why I hate interviews or lectures, explaining myself to an audience..."
Today, the family put out a statement..."Albert Finney, aged 82, passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side..."
Albert Finney will be totally missed...Broad Street sends its regards to Albert Finney's family...
