The Salford Star is beginning to feel the squeeze as closure looks like a possibility. Being unfettered by wealthy backers has allowed the Star to report honestly and for the good of the community. Of course, it hasn't always made us popular, and clearly it hasn't lined anyone's pockets.
As the great George Orwell famously said; "In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act", and we'd like to continue to provide a voice for everyday Salfordians and ensure that the truth is reported. Thankfully, some great acts share our passion and have got together in support of the Salford Star.
Nominees for Best Band in last year's Salford Star Awards, The Sandells, are headlining a great bill at the iconic Eagle Inn next Sunday 18th November. I had a word with Johann Kloos, who does guitars and keyboards for The Sandells about the band and the gig...
Why did you join the band?
Johann: "The Sandells were already quite well known as part of Manchester's underground music scene. They were formed by Tim, previously of The Things. They had backed Martin Bramah in an early incarnation of Factory Star, and also one Damo Suzuki of Can before that...I had already checked out Tim's other band Red Rec had booked as support to Factory Star earlier that year, so was encouraged to try for the spot. I was much more into heavy psychedelia and noise, which suited the band..."
What has been your highlight, so far?
"The high spot was making our album Forwards, recorded over a couple of days in Belfast, and playing two dates in Berlin earlier this year."
What made you decide to help out the Salford Star?
"I believe it's important to support independent news, that isn't in the back pocket of the Tories. The Star has supported The Sandells before, and other local acts. There isn't much coverage of local music, so this is important."
What's next for The Sandells?
"In the immediate future we are supporting the Monochrome Set at the Soup Kitchen in Manchester on the 1st December....we are working on new ideas for a projected new album."
Also on a top notch bill are the full-on Four Candles. They are guaranteed to deliver a high octane post-punk performance. They are an irresistible force-of-nature with wonderfully quirky tunes like I Hate Basket Weaving.
Matthew Hopkins is rapidly becoming a personal favourite with wistful lyrics and gorgeous melodies. This is an act destined for serious airplay. Sticky complete an eclectic line up. Their songs are lyrical and relatable with a kitchen sink drama feel. Fans of timeless, alternative music like The Wedding Present and The Undertones will not be disappointed.
