Salford artist Denis Whiteside was taking a break, walking down the prom in Llandudno when his phone pinged, telling him he'd won the John Purcell Paper Award. Which was great, considering he didn't even know he'd been entered for it...
No Place Art staged an exhibition at GX Gallery in London and asked Denis to exhibit one of his stunning embossed paper works...
"I didn't actually know there was any element of prize winning within it" he says "The idea was for the general public to see it and maybe buy it, and I just thought it was about that. I still don't know quite what it is that I've won!"
Denis, who is part of the respected Neo Artists team in Bolton, is hoping it is vouchers for some of the firm's paper which is really expensive and which he uses to great effect. His work on paper doesn't use any ink at all, relying on beautifully embossed lettering with the skeletons of stories to be read by light and shadow.
Last month, he explained to the Salford Star the rationale behind his creations; "Nothing is fixed" he said "That's why I make them so they are almost invisible. They are like whispers, but a whisper can be as powerful as a loud noise, for good or bad."
The work of Denis Whiteside is certainly getting louder and louder, and making one big noise in the art world...
