Star date: 27th October 2018 AFTER FOUR HOMELESS DEATHS ON MANCHESTER STREETS DEMO DEMANDS ACTION This afternoon, a demonstration against the growing number of homeless people who have died on Manchester streets took place in the city centre, marching from Piccadilly Gardens to Manchester Town Hall, where police intervened, and on to Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham's office on Oxford Road. After the deaths of four homeless people on Manchester's streets during the last two weeks alone, a demonstration took place today in the city centre demanding action. Protesters met at Piccadilly Gardens, where candles were lit to remember those who had died, before a march to Manchester Town Hall... "The police stopped us at the town hall and wouldn't let us go any further" says Angela Barratt from Salford and Manchester Street Support "So we went to GM Mayor, Andy Burnham's office on Oxford Road shouting 'No more deaths on our streets'." Burnham has pledged to end 'the need for rough sleeping' by 2020 but the problem seems to be getting worse with time running out. Those who attended the demonstration brought sleeping bags and warm jackets to hand out to the homeless on the coldest day of the winter so far... "Four homeless deaths in two weeks? This should be headline news" stated the organisers "Enough is enough!"

| re right and wrong. I do take your point on begging. it is wrong when like you say it goes on beer and drugs. it is intimidating to the old ladies etc. Re my point about apartments. This is what you give to people after they have been helped by projects like the Emmaus one. Believe me when I say there is a lot of falling off the waggon when it comes to booze. That is why, in cases like this, when people have drink and drug problems the rent can be paid direct so temptation does not come into it. Like I said before, I have it on good authority that the Emmaus scheme works. |

| Bobs right - but then he's also wrong.... Building studio apartments and giving these poor people a roof over their heads is the right thing to do.... however it won't be paid for via housing benefit because most of the prospective tennants/inhabitants will opt to have their housing benefit paid direct and then spend it on drugs/alcohol - part of the reason why they already find themselves on the street in the first place..... we need to find a building in Manchester and just give them a warm dry space, with showers and access to mental health, drugs and alcohol support...... Theres no way that this can be paid for out of housing benefits or any sort of benefits.... its should just be somewhere that a civilised society provides for those unable to cope with life....Begging should be banned in a wealthy country like ours |

| They need to address the drug and alcohol problems they have first and be responsible dont forget too some like living on the streets. |

| Bob does indeed raise a valid point about the Emmaus charity. I saw this picture the other day about council workers doing a charity ride, and one of the charities they were helping was Emmaus. In the picture were a few very senior people from Urban Vision. Bobs idea of building small studio flats sounds right to me. It looks like the basis of a deal. Why dont the experts from urban vision see if they can put something in place? |

| I know nothing of drug problems but I have to admit that I have seen plenty of great lads carted away in the big box through alcohol ones.It was this that made me see the error of my ways, after a close friend died. I just sacked it completely . Others are not so lucky, look at George Best. Alcoholics can not be told to give up the booze. They have to do it themselves, and to be honest, some just can't, and you have to accept this. All I say is this, just give them a small tiny studio apartment, a roof over their heads, it does not have to be a city center pied a terre, otherwise we we would all want one. You could build these for £40 000 a pop easy. Housing benefit would give a return of £5250 a year on this, a huge yield of over 12.5 per cent. You see the only reason this problem exists is so that the politicians with their high vis jackets, can go around and show the public what will happen to them if they do not tow the line and do what their social housing provider masters say. Lets face it none of us likes to see begging and homelessness on the streets, it is upsetting, and if my suggestions were carried out, there would be no excuse for it. But like I said ,it is just about power and authority. Mark my words ,Burnham will do sweet FA about homelessness. |

| What a lot of people don't realise is a lot of the homeless on the streets now have been through the doors of every charity going, and have been kicked out because they refuse to address their drug and alcohol issues.You have to accept some people are beyond hope. And to be brutally frank, some just need a plane ticket back to Eastern Europe, they shouldn't be our problem. |

| Good and i would have joined but i did not know about it. So many of us know that just simply so much more needs to be done for the homeless.More and more direct action needs to take place. I could keep going on but we all know how urgent this is. |

| Well, you saw my post the other day about the Emmaus team, there's your answer. Look it must work. Apart from the tory councilor , I am now told Dennett is supposed to be some sort of sponsor to this group in some way but I have not been able to confirm this. If he is, then why does he not pull his finger out and get stuck in with these people? Same goes for all the Peterloo mob. Why do they not put their weight behind all this? what does it take to get them moving? a cavalry charge up their arses to get things done? Bottom line is this, we cannot have people dossing down in the streets in this country, it is against their human rights, as well as being bad for their health which is an obvious result of this. What annoys me most, is that putting all this right ,would not cost money, it could actually make money, and save money. These people who sleep on the streets, they must all be entitled to housing benefit. Come on paul and Becky , and Merry john. Christmas is coming, we all know that although you do not talk to the Star, we all know you read it, it's that time of year when you can all put your hi vis jackets on and go out showing solidarity with the street dossers and get your pictures taken by the socialist lapdog Manchester Evening News. XXXX it. XXXX em all. |
