GREATER MANCHESTER JEWISH RESIDENTS SPEAK OUT AGAINST ‘ANTI-SEMITISM’ RALLY

Star date: 15th September 2018

'THEY DO NOT SPEAK IN OUR NAME...'

Jewish people from Salford and beyond have come out in opposition to tomorrow's Say No to Anti-Semitism rally in Manchester, organised by the Jewish establishment, arguing that constant attacks on Jeremy Corbyn detract from the fight against far right organisations; "the real threats of anti-Semitism"...They have organised a counter demonstration outside Central Library between noon and 2pm.

Full details here...

The Salford Star has received a letter representing Jewish people in Salford and beyond who do not agree with the Say No to Anti-Semitism rally in Manchester tomorrow. They argue that the constant attacks on Jeremy Corbyn, who was a founder of the Anti-Nazi League and has spent his whole life fighting racism, are totally unjustified and are detracting from the real threat from the far right. They also believe that the 'anti-Semitism' slurs are an attempt to silence criticism of Israel's policies in Palestine.

The full letter reads...

"We are a group of diverse, Jewish residents of Greater Manchester who have come together to challenge the well-publicised campaign of the Board of Deputies, prominent Labour Party grandees and the organisers of the Say No to Anti-Semitism rally in Manchester. Although anti-Semitism is rising, it is not part of our lived, everyday experience as members of Jewish communities in Britain. They do not speak in our name.

We live in a richly multi-ethnic city which has serious problems of racism and social exclusion, but we have come together to celebrate our cohesion in campaigns like We Stand Together. The fight against anti-Semitism should go hand in hand with a more active involvement of the Jewish establishment in fighting racism and in support of refugees.

We celebrate, as Jews, our long tradition of internationalism and support for the poor and oppressed at home and abroad, built on our collective memory of anti-Semitism, ethnic cleansing, seeking refuge - and mutual aid.

We worry that the effect of the negative campaign Enough is Enough will divide, rather than unite us. With the exaggeration of the extent of anti-Semitism in British life, it instils unnecessary fear in the Jewish population in the UK. It also detracts attention from the real threats of anti-Semitism, from the increasingly well-funded alt-right (e.g. in USA, with Steve Bannon), in far-right organisations in Britain and in explicitly anti-Semitic European governing parties (e.g.in Poland and Hungary).

The virulence of the well-publicised diatribes of Jewish leaders has the effect of silencing Palestinian voices and denying a platform to supporters of Palestinian rights. Whilst in Gaza, since March 30th, over 170 Palestinian protesters, mostly displaced refugees, including medics, journalists, disabled people and many children, were killed by the Israeli military, the British media are filled with the Jewish leadership's hurt over so-called 'anti-Semitic' remarks or Jeremy Corbyn's historical views on who 'gets' British irony.

The well-documented abuses of human rights by Israel, contravening international law, need to be called out. We Jews stand together with Palestinians to fight hate and racism in all of its forms, even when it is in our own communities.

We urge Jewish and other readers to respond positively to this statement. Please show the wider Manchester community that there are many people who reject racism and anti-Semitism and support free speech on Palestine and Israel.

Join us at a rally at Central Library, Manchester, 12-2.00pm, Sunday 16th September. Free Speech on Palestine! No to Anti-Semitism!"

Update: 16th September:

Jonny Wineberg Director of Operations We Stand Together has contacted the Salford Star with the following statement...

"We Stand Together stands against all forms of racism including anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. To attack a rally against anti-Semitism is a misjudgement. Our mission is to celebrate the diversity of our community and ensure all people feel safe and included. We would hope that those making such statements would instead look for opportunities for dialogue, which we would happily support."

It's often difficult to agree with Rossi, but on this subject his summing up of the situation is totally correct. Well said Sir!

Thank you Salford Star for the considerable courage you have shown in printing your report. I am a local Jewish socialist who is absolutely disgusted by the scurrilous campaign led by self-styled Jewish leaders, together with rightwing opportunist MP’s within the Labour Party, which is not at all directed at true antisemitism, but instead has two separate but clear political aims: (1). To crush all support for the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people against the apartheid Israeli regime and its illegal occupation of Palestine, and (2) To oust Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour party. To this so-called leadership I have this to say. Don’t imagine that your lies about the infamous IHRA definition of anti-semitism are going unnoticed, despite the rubbish printed in much of the media. The IHRA definition is a clear threat to free speech because of the use to which it is being put, a use for which it was never intended. Which “antisemite” said that? Well none other than Kenneth Stern, an avowed Zionist, and the author of the IHRA definition himself! The IHRA definition which has been turned into a bizarre fetish has been condemned as unfit for purpose by a host of top lawyers, including retired appeal court judge Sir Stephen Sedley, who is Jewish. So are all these people “antisemites” like Corbyn? You don’t believe me? Just check it out on the website of Jewish Voice for Labour where you will find a wealth of information unmasking the lies and duplicility of this fake campaign against antisemitism. Real antisemitism exists in all parts of society, but overwhelmingly on the right. But the rightwing clique behind this campaign care nothing about that. Instead they choose to attack the most consistently antiracist politician in the UK because he refuses to be silenced on the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. But however often these lies are repeated I have confidence that the truth behind this malicious campaign will prevail. I can only hope that it does so before the mendacity of the campaign itself succeeds in stirring up real antisemitism.

What's actually going on is an attempted right wing coup in the parliamentary Labour Party, with Blairites like Umuna being egged on by the right wing media. The right wing media dread a Corbyn led Government of genuine lefties more than anything. It terrifies them. Thus they try to crucify Corbyn and the Labour Left with the hot potato of anti semetism. Fact is, Corbyn and his mates are about as un-antisemitic as it gets. The thing is, politically, or in a field like show business, being branded with the stigma of anti semetism spells career death. It's the equivalent of being called a paedophile if you live on a Council Estate. Or Witch, if you're an old biddy with seven cats, living in a Lancashire village in the 1600s. Like I say, We ALL know that Corbyn and his Labour vision iSN'T anti semetic. He just wants some justice for one of the most oppressed groups of people on the Planet Earth, The Palestinians ... and we, if we want an end to this monstrous cabal of right wing vampires that are sucking the lifeblood out of the poor, be they on JSA or ESA, and also the badly exploited underpaid Working Class - Need to get behind Corbyn. The powerful interests running this country know that he is a potential Prime Minister, and they tremble at the thought of it. Hence the hoary old anti semetic load of bullshit. And also using those wretched "Useful Idiots" like Margaret Hodge, Chukka Umunna and Lucia Berger. They Must NOT be allowed to succeed.

This issue results from ignorance and clever propaganda. One can be against the behaviour of the Israeli Zionist Government without being anti Semitic. Being a supporter of justice for Palestine doesn't mean you are anti Semitic but that you would like to see Palestinians given their rights and freedom. There are many Jewish people who are against the Zionist actions of their Government and these are the ones who object to this Rally. Clever right wing media propaganda has presented criticism of the Israel Government as anti Semitic and have included JC in this accusation. I believe these untrue accusations are designed to damage the success of the left wing of the Labour Party and the success of this propaganda comes from ignorance. The difference between being anti Semitic and being against a country's politics is basic to understanding this issue.

In the same way that I know you wouldn't have published a letter from the supporters of the MEN arena bomber because it would be completely unrepresentative of local Muslims, the message in this letter you have published that 'enough is enough' is wrong is utterly unrepresentative of the thinking of local Jews. Your letter writer has a political agenda which is unconcerned with anti-Semitism. Jews are very concerned and that's the only point of the rally.

See Nick's comment below...The authors of this letter are very genuine as we have spoken to them before publishing, and they are not 'fake' but people with opposing views to those organising the rally today. And they are entitled to their view, especially as they are Jewish.

Surely, if you protest a march against antisemitism, you must, by definition support antisemitism. I do not believe for one moment that the authors of this letter are genuine. Racism is alive and well and living in the extremist left wing that is now the Labour Party. No amount of fake protesters will convince otherwise. Sick party

Jews who accept the hate filled bigotry of the Palestinian narrative are wilfully ignorant to the dangers they present to themselves and the rest of Jewish society. The Palestinians, their children and their children's children are the only people in the world who are continually paid to hate and do nothing but plot to kill.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
