52% RISE IN NUMBER OF HOMELESS SALFORD PEOPLE IN PRIORITY NEED
|
|
Star date: 29th June 2018
46 SALFORD CHILDREN LIVING IN B&BS AS HOMELESSNESS CRISIS INCREASES New figures published by the Government today show that those people who are unintentionally homeless and in priority need in Salford rose by 52% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, 46 children were living in Bed and Breakfast accommodation in the city, compared to none the year before. The figures show the homelessness crisis getting worse. Full details here...

Take a look around central Salford these days and all you can see are cranes and apartment blocks going up all over the place. Yet at the same time, homelessness in the city is increasing, according to figures published by the Government today. People who are 'unintentionally homeless and in priority need' in Salford rose by 52% during the last financial year, 2017-18, with 517 people within this category, compared to 340 during 2016-17. Of those accepted as being in priority need, 97 were aged 16 to 24, while the majority were aged 25-44 (332). Ten people were aged over 60. 306 households in priority need had dependent children, while 46 children belonging to 26 households were also living in Bed and Breakfast accommodation, compared to none the previous year. 59 people in priority need had a physical disability, while 111 had a mental illness or disability. There was also a slight rise in those classed as 'eligible, homeless but not in priority need', from 490 in 2016-17, to 518 in 2017-18. The tables published today also show statistics for those cases where 'positive action succeeded in preventing homelessness'. For Salford the total figure for cases 'prevented' or 'relieved' was 415. This compares to 4,873 in Wigan, 2,304 in Manchester and 1,890 in Bury. Overall, the figures are a sad indictment of a city that is seeing more housing being built than for generations. Yet little of it is being used as a social safety net. And much of it is being used as profit farms for wealthy investors.

| Bob the regular, before signing up for a major programme of house building,I would like to know how many empty properties there are in Salford?
I'd also like to see mayors Dennett and Burnham having the power to force buy-to-invest speculators
to let their empty properties at Social Housing rent levels! |

| Ray is for the most part right in what he says, but the fact remains, there are not enough houses. there are few empty homes, and many people who do not have their own home. I am not just talking about the homeless, I am talking about the huge numbers of young people who have to stay at home with their parents. These people are not getting married and not having kids till later, and because of that, they are then having fewer kids. Don't worry, it's all part of the great master plan. |

| Bob the regulator, the main problem,in my opinion,
is not the lack of physical housing but that property bubbles are used to mask the fact that Tory,Brexìt,Clapped out Britain has a broken economy!
Even if Theresa May navigates Brexìt,she is likely
to be brought down bý the impending property market
coĺlapse! |

| In answer to Ray. House prices are too high. artificially high, and they are kept so on purpose for 2 main reasons. first,to keep us all in debt to the international money machine, like Dennett and his crew like to get us into by going to places like Cannes to get investors, and secondly, to keep us all in our place which all politicians adhere to. The torys frighten their voters by telling them they will end up on council estates if they don't tow the line and pay the mortgage, and the labour lot try and bribe the workers with the affordable housing cheap rent bullshit. they are both as bad as each other. Wages are also too low, there should be some ratio of say an industrial workers wage, say bricky or joiner or plumber, to the price of say so many sq foot of new build property. These type of workers also, in a free labour market have a relationship with other none construction industry workers. a car mechanic earns about the same as a plumber. a staff nurse the same as a technician grade electrician. The underlying problem is though, we do not have enough houses, The labour lot knocked them down under pathfinder, and the tories do not like you building in the nice suburbs, so called green belt.Even if we all had footballers wages we still would not solve the housing shortage, building more is the only answer. |

| Mr. Rossi;
When things get hard for me, I cut out the inessentials and the luxuries, and concentrate on the necessities. I don’t throw my money about on fripperies or wasted plans.
All I would like you to do is to tell us, without any propagandising or references to your god, Dennett.
How much has the council absolved developers from paying on the grounds of ‘viability’. A general round figure will do?
How much has this council spent on what can only be described as prestige projects. Perhaps the gardens at Worsley might be an example?
How much has this council loaned out, in return for drip-feed interest payments when the money is need now, not at some time in the distant future?
The subtract the total of the above from the money the council has been starved of by the government; and what is the answer.
I await a simple factual answer from you.

| 300 flats built in article below. why didn't salford council take flats instead of cash on this site. if they take cash, they have to pay government back for money government paid for cpo. if they make social housing provision they don't. not quite that simple, but near enough. |

| The point I was trying to make, Bob the regulator,
was that you can't discuss house prices in isolation
to the level of wages - are house prices too high or
wages too low?
The current property boom is being funded by the deliberate suppression of workers wages - a key strategic aim of the current Tory Government. |

| Was Rossi weened on the milk of Dennett's breast? Dennett sorted his digs out and to be honest seems to have little interest in the rest of us. How much longer can you go on blaming the bloody Tories for inept leadership and slack arse policy. If they had the flaming money it would make little difference the planners need a set of balls and force the issues with the developers on affordable housing. Stop coming out with your Labour Love in Policies and talk sense for once people believe you are a Troll prove them wrong. |

| Salfordmike.thank you for bringing some sense into this article. Salford council seem to have a problem telling developer's "They must built some affordable properties within their planning application. They also need to ask for planning fees. The councils planning department are bending over backwards for the multi million profit grabbing investors. In doing so it's the people of Salford who suffer. It's also costing the tax payers of Salford putting these families up in B&Bs or hotel's. In most cases they have ended up in this position through no fault of their own. |

| @Rossi: While I agree 8 years of Tory austerity hasn't helped, it is not the fault of the Tories that this Labour Council does not collect fees from developers it should, nor is it their fault the Council refuses to challenge these developers to build affordable housing. I point you again to the £18 million (possibly more) developers in this city should have paid along with the latest £1 million which is going to be unpaid for the new developments in Lower Broughton. £19 Million quid, that could've helped build affordable homes for those people stuck in B&B's and homeless. |

| I'm not a Conservative, Wrote. I am a supporter of Salford Labour. With regard the homeless statistics. All that ican say is that the real villain of the piece is this wicked Conservative Government. If they hadn't have starved Salford City Council of 200 million pounds in funding over the last eight or so years, then I would wager that there would only be a handful of homeless people in this city of ours. Now, what I would say is this. This is the moment that we the citizens should get behind our Salford Labour Party and give them the support that they need. Also we need to get behind our fantastic Mayor, Mayor Paul. That man is the democratically elected leader of Salford, and a whining bunch of malcontents cannot change that. If Mayor Paul could eliminate homelessness, then he would do so in the twinkling of an eye, but it isn't that easy, as this Wicked Tory Government has starved our council of TWO HUNDRED MILLION POUNDS!! IT IS CASH STRAPPED. IT ONLY HAS SO MUCH MONEY AND HAS TO DO THE BEST THAT IT CAN WITH WHAT LITTLE IT HAS. DO YOU GET THAT?? Good. I rest my case. |

| All this "bank of mum and dad", "trying to save up a deposit", its all bullshit, underpining the whole global financial system. trying to get us all to trample on one another in the rush to get on the "housing ladder". Thats a good bit of closet Tory talk for you mr rayofsunshine (for phil as well). I aint no closet tory or closet trot for that matter. I just like things done right and a bit of social justice. Would it not be a form of profit share, if the workers building the houses got them cheaper? Ahhhh! what about people who can't do building work because they are too lazy, stupid or just three parts pissed? will say the likes of rossi and ray. well these people who built the new homes would vacate their old ones for the workshy to move into.Which ever way you look at it, our council have made a balls of things, they aint got a clue. The tory government are just as bad |

| Perhaps rather than the playground ego-trip comments, it would be better to reflect that this is about homelessness. And that children in Salford are homeless and living in Bed and Breakfast accommodation, probably outside of Salford. In a city that slashed its homelessness services and focussed on building sparkly expensive flats. Pay them the respect of sticking to the story, please. |

Do you agree with my proposal to boost the living

| The irony and hypocrisy of Rossi is astounding. Not only has he swore, something he had a go at me for, he also accused someone else of talking "bollocks", when that's all he consistently spews. He is either the most useful idiot Labour could hope for or he's a troll, possibly a Tory one, as his comments only make Labour and their supporters look like idiots. Although you could argue they don't need much help with that. It'd be pretty sad if he's the former. It's supporters like him that will look at the numbers above and try to absolve Labour because "It's progress!" or "Imagine the moolah we'll get back in Council Tax and what they'll spend in local shops!" Which completely overlooks the fact normal Salfordians, the people who were born and bred here, need affordable homes. Instead their old homes are being knocked down and only a few affordable ones being built. |

| Let me expand on the point I made below about home ownership.I am retired, and the bit of cash i put by ,after years of work, I used it to buy my council home. If I had left it,like many others do ,in the bank "cos if I ever need it I know its there" as they all say, I would have had to pay rent till my cash was below £6000. My grankids will have my flat when I am 6 foot under. What sort of start are the housing providers of Salford offering for Salford kids? sweet f.a. Dennett and his pal Merry are suposed to be setting up a building firm. whats that all about? Will this help Salfords young people get a home. What a load of cods. There is plenty of spare land owned by the council, we have plenty of able bodied tradespeople, materials cost balls all, why are people not getting together to develop this land. There again let laurell and hardy do it. at least we get a good laugh when they fall on their arses wasting our money. |

| Good point Joe. With regards to Jeff, don't you think it would be better for all concerned if you did buy your discounted council house from our so called housing providers. These people only think of their own greed, and nothing for those in need. You could do it up to your own liking , and after say 5 years you could have enough equity to move on. You could then do your bit to help the housing situation out by renting your place out to whoever you thought needed it the most. The providers think only of how much wages their bosses get, greed comes before social need with these people. Also when your dead and gone, your family will have a house. |

| Now in my mid 50's, I find myself a little bit better off, and could afford mortgage payments, but can't quite save a deposit. Rather than sticking homeless families in expensive short term accommodation, wouldn't it make more sense for the council to help me with a deposit and free up my tenancy for a family? I wouldn't buy my social housing because I don't agree with that. |
