For anyone who still doesn't know Bugzy Malone, he's the King of the North, putting Manc grime on the national radar, where his videos and Spotify sounds garner multi-million hits..."Way bigger than Kim Kardashian's bottom", as he says.
Like The Beatles had Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields, Bugzy has Cheetham Hill Road and Bury New Road featuring large in his videos and lyrics. His tunes are punctuated, not so much with raps, but with real life stories of personal torment, gangs, the lure of wealth and a total biography, from jail to jewels...check the Warning video ...this stuff takes the genius of West Side Story's Officer Krupke to a whole new 21st Century level.
The own-brand clothes, the classy cars and wads of cash are underwritten with a poetry of heartfelt angst that rings true with loads and loads and loads of young people...
"Every day when I wake up I want to motivate and inspire people" he says in a promo video* ahead of his show on Saturday 23rd June, at Gorilla on Whitworth Street in Manchester. Indeed, the new album is titled B.Inspired.
Bugzy is hosting the show as part of a new nationwide BACARDÍ music campaign called Do What Moves You, with support on the night from rising MC Hardy Caprio, BBC Radio 1Xtra's DJ Semtex, and Manchester rappers Lady Ice and Stef Smith.
It's only £5 to get in, there's a free drink for the first hundred fans through the door, and all proceeds from the night go to the award-winning non-profit Lonely Whale, which aims to clean up and preserve the oceans.
