Until 24th June, the Sainsbury's stores in Salford are taking a vote on which is to be its Local Charity of the Year.
Sainsbury's on Regent Road has shortlisted three charities - MIND In Salford, the Stroke Association and Alzheimer's Research UK - and Emily Allen, whose mum suffers with the condition, is asking people to vote for the latter...
"My mum was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's eight years ago and I cannot express how hard it is to see a loved one lose their memories, abilities, and dignity" she explains "She hasn't known my name for at least four years, can no longer talk, and last month she finally lost the ability to walk.
"After witnessing the heartbreak dementia has caused for my family and others, I can't think of a more deserving cause and that's why I'm urging you to vote for Alzheimer's Research UK" she adds "Thanks to this pioneering charity, I now know that through the power of research we will discover a cure for dementia – but we do not have a moment to waste."
There are 2,557 people with dementia in Salford and one in three people will know someone with the condition. Despite this, there are currently no treatments to slow, stop or prevent it. Alzheimer's Research UK is working to change the misconceptions surrounding dementia, while investing in research to hopefully lead to a cure.
