In all of the 56 year history of the amateur St Luke's Arts and Drama Society, or SLADS, director, Alex Whittle reckons its latest show, Into The Woods, is the hardest the team have ever done; which is some going as there's been well over one hundred top quality productions over the years...
"There's around two dozen in the cast and, usually in a musical there's about six main characters, but in this there's 13" she says "The music and the timings are also very fast and a there's lot to say in a short period of time."
Characters include Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack from the Beanstalk and more but don't expect everything to go great for the children's favourites. Indeed the production comes with a 'parental guidance' note...
"The moral of the story is 'be careful what you wish for', because, in the first part everyone gets a happy ending...but in the second act you learn that happy endings are not always that happy" explains Alex, who also plays the Baker's wife in the production as well as being the Deputy Director of SLADS.
Into The Woods is a musical but with many spoken scenes, and isn't that well known on British stages...
"It was written by Stephen Sondheim and brought out as a film a couple of years ago, in which James Corden was the narrator and the Baker" says Sophie Mynett, who plays Cinderella, and is also SLADS' Marketing Manager "It's an established film but as a musical is less well known."
That could all be about to change in Salford, as the large cast prepare to get down Into The Woods where a lavish set awaits and, hopefully, not too many unhappy endings...
