Henry Hobson's dilemma has now worked its way into English parlance, as his 'choice' is no choice when outwitted by his three daughters who want to marry against the boot maker's will and wallet.
Now Harold Brighouse's play, set in Salford and made famous by the Fifties film with John Mills and Charles Laughton, is coming home, to be staged over twelve nights at Salford Arts Theatre by its in-house Salford Theatre Company.
"My first encounter with Hobson's Choice was as a child watching the1954 film on TV" recalls Scott Berry, who takes on the role of Henry Hobson in the production "Even then I was captivated by the blustering buffoon that was Hobson and the arc of Will Mossop's character.
"The real hook for me though, was the strength of Hobson's daughter Maggie; she reminded me of all the women in our family" he adds "I revisited the play at school where I realised what a local play it was. The places and street names that I knew were down in writing, making the text spring from the page and become real. Now, just over a century since its first UK performance, we want to bring this fabulous story to life for another generation of audiences."
The play, directed by Roni Ellis, also stars Lyndsay Fielding as Maggie and she's well up for the role..."I am absolutely delighted to be involved in Hobson's Choice" she says "Harold Brighouse's dependable classic has stood the test of over 100 years and it's especially exciting to be working on it with the talented team at in-house Salford Theatre Company, just a stone's throw from where it is set. Salford Arts Theatre is always a great space to work in and has as much strength and heart as this play."
Hobson's Choice is a classic play returning to the city – those who have never seen it should do so; it's part of Salford's heritage, with a positive attitude, to boot...
