Squats, street homeless, affordable housing crisis, big developers, profit and community loss. It's all connected and one of the biggest issues facing Manchester and Salford.
This Thursday, 22nd March, Manchester Meteor, which has been looking in depth at the issues, is holding a public meeting, complete with short film screenings and a panel discussion, at Partisan on Cheetham Hill Road in Manchester.
On the area's homelessness, the Meteor states "Both Manchester and Greater Manchester saw greater percentage increases than the 15% rise recorded across England, where country-wide numbers rose from 4,134 in 2016 to 4,751 in 2017.
"The latest report from Shelter calculates that 307,000 people are homeless in Britain, a 4% rise since 2016, which means across the country one in every 200 people are currently homeless" it adds "Manchester is described as a homeless 'pressure zone' by Shelter, with 3,511 people homeless, meaning one in 154 are without a home."
It is, in part, due to statistics like these that the Meteor comprehensively reported what was going on, via a project, in conjunction with the Lush Charity Pot, which has featured a publication and this live event on Thursday.
The panel will be chaired by Tom Barlow, of the Media Fund, with Nick Napier, a squatter and member of Lousy Badger Media, Josie Salmon, from Greater Manchester Housing Action, Conrad Bower from The Meteor and a representative of the Salford Star.
