On Wednesday evening 14th February, Grenfell residents will be holding a march and rally in London, and at the same time in Manchester the community and trade unionists will be holding a similar event...
"Our objective is to not only show our support for those affected by the horrific fire, and to offer them our solidarity; but to also show our commitment to ensuring that this tragedy will not be forgotten" says Stephen Hall, President of GMATUC, the representative body for grassroots trades unionists in Greater Manchester.
"Another wider objective is to raise the possibility of similar solidarity events being organised in other towns and cities across the country on the first anniversary of the tragedy on the 14th June 2018" he adds.
The event will consist of a silent candlelit march led by 71 people walking in single file carrying placard size photos of those Grenfell Tower residents who died in the tragedy. Anyone wanting to take part is being asked to assemble from 6.15pm onwards outside Samsung/Costa Coffee at the junction of Market Street/Cross Street in Manchester city centre.
The march will proceed at 6.30pm from there along Market Street to the Queen Victoria statue in Piccadilly Gardens where there will be a minute's silence, followed by a few short speeches by two Grenfell residents, the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), North West TUC, and a Greater Manchester Housing activist.
