Eccles' premier live rock venue ushers in the New Year in style with one of the North West's finest live acts. Rock act A Band of Gypsies roll up at Wangies to welcome 2018 with attitude. The circuit stalwarts have honed their craft and receive rave reviews wherever they play.
They've earned their hard-rock stripes at clubs, pubs and biker rallies, and boast a couple of thousand Facebook fans. Tony and Russ first started A Band of Gypsies over ten years ago and despite having had several drummers over the years, the core of the band has stayed strong.
They're adept at playing live and boast quite a set list. It's a whistle-stop tour that takes the audience through the essential moments of blues and rock. They're a talented bunch of musicians, and their ability allows them to include covers by the greatest and most gifted rock n' roll groups. They'll riff and solo their way through classic numbers by the very best including tracks by Black Sabbath, Rory Gallagher and Pink Floyd.
"This band is all about the recreation of the sounds of the greats like Hendrix and Clapton" says Gypsies' guitarist and frontman, Tony Wood "We have great fun replicating those moments in time and add our own special touches to the songs."
The band provides masterful and accurate renditions of the classics with on-point musicianship. But they're definitely not serious muso-types, and the focus is firmly placed on giving entertainment to the punters. The Gypsies are keen to deliver an entertaining live show, ensure that they have a laugh and a make a few new pals along the way.
I have to ask if there is downside to gigging on a night renowned for boozy celebrations? "I don't really feel like the gig has any bad aspects on NYE, especially at Wangies, as you're around good people who are there for the music and to enjoy the company of good like-minded people" Tony explains.
It's clearly a labour of love for the lads, and you'd be hard pressed to get them spend their New Year's Eve elsewhere. If you're looking for a fitting way to let your hair down and see in 2018, A Band of Gypsies at Wangies could well provide the perfect night out.
