Salford Choral Society, now in its 70th year, is an independent society run by its members which number around one hundred people from all over Greater Manchester.
On Saturday 11th November, the Society opens its 2017/18 season at The Stoller Hall, the new concert venue at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, where it will be performing two works by Fauré, Requiem and Cantique de Jean Racine, Poulenc's Gloria and Stravinsky's Serenade in A...
"The Fauré Requiem is one of the most poignant settings of the Requiem Mass and is music to comfort and to reassure the faithful in the face of death, rather than to overwhelm them with the finality of judgement" states the Society "It is impossible not to be moved by the ethereal beauty of this humble masterpiece.
"Fauré wrote Cantique de Jean Racine much earlier than the Requiem at the end of his student days, but it has a mature simplicity that most students would foolishly scorn" they explain "Poulenc's Gloria, with its captivating mixture of solemnity and mischievous exuberance, abounds in joy, yet is always sincere and humble, and is among the finest examples of religious music of our time.
"Stravinsky's Serenade in A completes the programme" they add "Evoking an 18th Century festive occasion, it has been described as the 'loveliest' of his solo piano works."
Salford Choral Society will be joined by Bolton soprano, Lorna Rushton, and baritone, Benedict Kearns; accompanied by Roderick Barrand on piano and conducted by Tom Newall.
