SALFORD STAR MARY BURNS AWARDS 2009

MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 9

THE `I'M GONNA SUE YER ASS' AWARD

Lots of contenders for this category – from Chek Whyte's `people' who threatened to sue the Salford Star while we were investigating his bankruptcy (never happened), to John Carberry, head of Salford Council press dept, who suggested the Star might get sued if it didn't remove a pair of 'inverted commas' from a story (like who can be bothered going to court over a pair of `inverted commas'?)…to Urban Splash's Tom Bloxham who has been chucking legal letters and gagging agreements around this year, (although not to the Star) – unfortunately we can't give details because they've all got gagging orders…

However, while there were many worthy nominations, again there can only be one winner…a winner who has threatened to sue the whole world's media!

HAZEL BLEARS

Yet another award for Hazel who surely couldn't have dreamt of such a stunning showing at the MARYS

Yep, the Salford MP has threatened to sue everyone in the media over allegations that she flipped her homes. She told the Labour Party re-selection meeting in June…

"In that few weeks period when there was this national hysteria going on, the prospect of getting a fair hearing was nil…I will now need to think very carefully about whether or not  I wish to bring proceedings on that basis because …my reputation has been damaged, and damaged by the constant repetition of things that are untrue."

Six months down the line, and almost a year since the `flipping' allegations were first made, Hazel's sued nobody.

FURNESS QUAY DEVELOPER PROVIDES NO AFFORDABLE HOUSING ON HUGE APARTMENT SCHEME

Salford's planning scandal is to go up another gear this week when an application by developer De Trafford for 421 apartments in blocks up to 27 storeys high on the site of Furness Quay is considered by councillors. Thanks to Salford City Council policies, the developer will be providing no affordable properties, while, through 'viability' assessments it is set to avoid over £1million in planning fees.

Meanwhile, the English Cities Fund (ECf) is continuing its secrecy in relation to new apartments and an office development around Chapel Street and New Bailey.
