HAZEL BLEARS

Yes, the former Cabinet Minister, who found herself embroiled up to her neck in the MPs expenses scandal, came out with this wonderful quote justifying it all during her re-selection meeting at Salford's Civic Centre in June…

Over to you Hazel…

"When I first went into Parliament I was told by existing MPs…`These are the expenses, basically divide it by twelve and that's what you claim every month'…That's what was the established culture. And that was wrong…It did develop into that culture of entitlement rather than what was needed in order to do your job..."

She added: "It enabled you to claim things that are utterly bizarre and that no reasonable rational person would have agreed to pay for…"

Like, over £50,000 on mortgage repayments…over £10,000 on food and over £8300 on furniture, including £651 on a  mattress; £1763.95 on tellies and videos; £217 on towels; £275 on a glass table; £60.40 on wine glasses; £295 on a mirror and £59 on some scales.

Yes Hazel, it "was wrong"…Yet you're still there as Salford's MP – why?

Ladies and Gentlemen. The QUOTE OF THE YEAR AWARD goes to…

NUMBER OF COUNCILLORS COULD BE CULLED IN REVIEW OF WARDS

The number of Salford councillors could be cut in a sweeping review of the city by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England..."The review will re-draw ward boundaries across the city as well as deciding how many councillors should be elected to the council in total" said a spokesperson for the Commission.

Salford currently has three councillors per ward but, with new wards possibly emerging as the city grows, this might be cut to two per ward.

AS £5.5MILLION AVOIDED BY DEVELOPERS SALFORD MAYOR SAYS IT'S A 'MYTH'!

In the latest issue of Salford Council's propaganda mag, Life in Salford, Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, has denounced the "myth" that "developers don't contribute money to the city. It's simply not true" he says.

Yes, they do contribute some money but they also avoid millions of pounds in payments and provision of affordable housing. Indeed, Salford Star analysis shows that developers avoided almost £5.5million in payments last year, as the Mayor only tells half the truth.
