SALFORD STAR MARY BURNS AWARDS 2009

MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 7

THE WEBSITE OF THE YEAR AWARD

This year it has been incredibly difficult to pick an overall website winner – there's Salford City Council's impossible to find anything effort; there's the North West Development Agency's `put nothing on it no-one will notice' site; and the NDC's ongoing absolutely useless waste of the internet…

These were all contenders. But in the end the judges decided to share the MARY between two stunningly incompetent sites, both with a brief to let everyone know what they're up to.

Ladies and Gentlemen. The WEBSITE OF THE YEAR AWARD…goes to…

Please do a drum roll and click here…

HAZEL BLEARS
&
MANCHESTER SALFORD PATHFINDER

Yes, Hazel Blears jointly wins this MARY for her fantastic website which really keeps her constituents in touch with her every move – er, well it would do if it had been updated since March 2008

Hazel's website resembles her political career with tumbleweed blowing down its entries. Perhaps she's got a second or third net home that she's claiming for somewhere but this main site has nobody in. The last story was `Alistair Darling's First Budget' and the Photo Gallery is full of photos from almost two years ago when Hazel was still smiling.

The judges have given Hazel this MARY for completely not keeping in touch with her constituents.

Hazel shares the MARY with Manchester Salford Pathfinder, which was slated this year by the Audit Commission for not informing the community, via its website, of what it was up to.

Everyone else on the planet knew exactly what the £multi million Government housing regeneration project was up to – developers, councils, the universities, housing associations…everyone except the communities who were at the sharp end of the demolitions and clearances that have characterised Pathfinder's activities.

The Audit Commission stated that "papers are not routinely distributed to residents in the pathfinder area, nor are they available through the pathfinder website."

When the Salford Star brought this report to the attention of the public at the beginning of December, the Pathfinder website hadn't been updated since March 2008 (have they got a pact with Hazel?). However, since this mess has been made public, suddenly a whole year's worth of news items have appeared like magic. Incredible!

Ladies and Gentlemen. The joint winners of the WEBSITE OF THE YEAR are…

Humbug---who cares if some little proles end up losing their houses so long as we can keep getting grants off the government and line the pockets of developers? Surely everyone knows that putting a little metal sign up at either end of a regeneration area costs lots of money? Then of course there is the wage bill for all the council staff, not to mention the custard creams and coffee. Dont forget that they have to keep getting consultants in to do surveys until they get the answer that they want. After that it,s no more surveys. Why keep them informed? They will stil vote us in at the next election. Sod them!

SALFORD COUNCIL COURT COSTS

Star date: 7th September 2010

THE QUEEN CHASES SALFORD COUNCIL FOR OVER £500,000

Never mind the summons for your Council Tax, Salford City Council itself is now being chased by `Her Majesty's Court Services' for over half a million quid it owes for five year's rent and stuff on Bexley Square, site of the old Salford Town Hall and now the city's main courthouse.

As Salford Council tries to stop Her Maj merging its courts with Manchester following the no-show of the new Eccles court building, there's the little matter of the £578,468 bill to settle – or the Council could find itself in the court rather than fighting for its survival.

HOPE MATERNITY UNIT SCANDAL

Star date: 6th September 2010

REPORT RECOMMENDING HOPE MATERNITY UNIT SHOULD STAY OPEN WAS `IGNORED' AND CONSULTATION WAS `BIASED'

An official report recommending that Hope Hospital's Maternity Unit should stay open was "ignored" and there was "a clear indication of bias" in the consultation proceedings, according to a new document produced by midwives.

The document states that "there was never a chance of maternity and neonatal services being retained at Hope, from the very start of the consultation process". And, as a result of population increase, it adds, "We judge that the new unit at St Mary's will be barely able to meet the needs of its own population let alone that of Salford…"

"Why has the almost 100% opposition to this, been arrogantly ignored?" Mike Sweeney

Hundreds of people wearing Born In Salford t-shirts gathered in Buile Hill Park on Saturday to show opposition to plans to shut down the Maternity Unit at Hope Hospital, now called Salford Royal.

Backed by Ryan Giggs, Mike Sweeney, John Thompson and Salford Reds, the campaign is gathering renewed momentum as pressure mounts on the new government to reverse the decision to close Salford's baby unit.
