CHARLESTOWN AND LOWER KERSAL NEW DEAL FOR COMMUNITIES
Yes, the NDC – or Now Definitely Clueless as it's fondly known – has been in the area for almost ten years and is preparing to exit in 2011. During its time in Salford the NDC will have spent £53million…doing what exactly, apart from putting up a poncy Sports Village, knocking down people's houses, attempting to build houses on green field sites, putting up houses no-one can afford and taking rather large salaries?
Residents of the area will be thrilled to hear that a recent report by the Manchester Independent Economic Review isn't impressed either. It stated that "there appeared to be no significant association between New Deal for Communities (NDC) designation and improvement".
The report added that "hard evidence on impact is limited and it is therefore difficult to draw robust conclusions concerning the extent to which interventions have succeeded in reversing or ameliorating trends towards increased polarisation".
The report did say that the area hasn't got any worse but didn't say that it had got any better either. Clearly £53million down the drain.
And what is more, today, news broke that there are allegedly discrepancies in the NDC accounts amounting to £50,000, with talk of money laundering and all sorts… Meanwhile, there's also loads of minutes missing from NDC Board meetings. Not good for a `community led' regeneration project.
Surely it's time for a Public Inquiry into the affairs and dealings of the NDC – but in the meantime, the staff can pat themselves on the back as they are the undisputed winners of this prestigious MARY.
Ladies and Gentlemen. The `£53,000,000 DOWN THE DRAIN' AWARD goes to…
