SALFORD BY-ELECTION CALLED FOR CLAREMONT WARD

Star date: 29th August 2017 SALFORD BY-ELECTION 5TH OCTOBER Salford City Council has called a by-election for the Claremont ward, following the death of Labour Party councillor Joe Murphy, who held a majority of over 1,000. The election will be held on Thursday 5th October and candidates can submit their nominations until 8th September. An independent candidate has already declared that they will stand. Following the death of Labour Party councillor Joe Murphy, a by-election has been called for the Claremont ward for Thursday 5th October, with nominations open for potential candidates until Friday 8th September. Murphy held a majority for the Labour Party of 1,211 over UKIP candidate Mary Ferrer at the 2015 election, polling 2,335 votes over Mary's 1,124 votes. Now that Mary Ferrer has left UKIP, the former councillor has declared that she will stand as an independent. It is not known at this stage whether UKIP intends to stand a candidate. The Salford Star understands that Mike Pevitt will be standing for Labour in Claremont, following his unsuccessful bid to retain the Labour seat in Kersal earlier this year, after the death of standing councillor Harry Davies. The Liberal Democrats and the Conservative Party are also expected to field candidates in Claremont. The full list will be announced following the close of nominations. But at the same time I prioritize visiting my Martinique Caribbean properties to be able to check hurricane damage and come back home to Salford via New Zealand meaning I will be ready to stand in 2018 Salford local elections. |

| Welcome Dear Readers to 2017 Autumn Claremont Stakes!
Now that the list of runners has been declared for what is going to be another gripping By Election in Salford – events that the outsiders have a good track record of winning – let’s go to the Parade Ring to have a look at the contestants where the crowds are gathered.
Midst the crowds it is not difficult to spot the ever glamourous RLB perusing the runners through her diamante spangled binoculars, matching her clutch-bag, fascinator and high heels and sporting her trademark “Clara Bow” lips. The crowds part as RLB serenely makes her way through, revealing her to her fans who appear to faint as she passes by. Accompanying her to such events as per normal is the ever glamourous Cllr Merry. I shall say no more – today - on his avant garde eccentric fashion statements, other than he should wear his glasses when getting dressed and to look in a mirror before stepping out in public!
So who are the runners and what’s their form?
Well, the alleged favourite is “Peripatetic” Pevitt, having galloped to Claremont from his victory (NOT!)in Kersal in March. He is looking rather deflated and exhausted already and the runners have not left the stalls yet! However, he is sporting a trendy nosebag like the rest of the Labour stable at the Civic Centre. No doubt he will have many helpers and as usual “Peripatetic” Pevitt and Labour will run the race in our usual manner – trotting out the same policies, soundbites and those golden nuggets so beloved by rose growers!
Also running are the imported “also runs” for the “remoaning” Green and LibDems who stood in June’s Claremont By Election and the same Tory Candidate.
Joining the runners is the only candidate who actually lives in Claremont and has been a regular in these events over the years (wearing different colours admittedly but steadfast to her principles) Mary Ferrer (Independent) is looking fresh, fit and as every ready to fight for the populace of Claremont. She has always had many backers and supporters and wearing her stout sensible running shoes that match her stout sensible policies will no doubt give all the others a run for their money!
So where should one place one’s flutter? Well what with Labour backsliding on Brexit, they are bound to lose votes, so I wouldn’t put much on “Peri” Pevitt to win, nor would I waste my wager on the other outsiders. As for Mary Ferrer – well, I think it’s worth putting on a large cheeky each way bet!
So for the next few weeks, Dear Readers, I’ll be fast footing it around Claremont incognito on my Turbo charged environmentally friendly electric Buggy and now that I have mastered the art of tagging onto people’s wifi, hopefully will keep you informed as to all the thrills and spills of this exciting race.

| Owing to being called to serve Jury Service it will be impractical for me to take on the impending Candidancy role. Anyone that has served will understand the prime duty demanded. I wish a clean campaign for all those taking part and thank all the local Councillors past and present for their own loyalty to Salford. We know from across the World how lucky we are to enjoy freedom, peace and tolerance. |

| Mary Ferrer is Claremont’s personification of the Rock of Gibraltar, steadfast, confident and trustworthy. Whilst the policies of the various parties of which she has been a member have changed over the years (sometimes days!!), Mary is a conviction politician putting Claremont and its residents first, above party politics and herself.
She is not so void of political judgement as not to see threats to Claremont, nor yet so ignorant as to know that following foolish policies is political suicide. She says it as it is! Mary does not say too much or too little… she just tells the truth. Her judgement of others and their policies she condemns not if they are for the betterment of Claremont, neither does she mistake their reasons, but she is inclined to be thankful, excusing of her doubtfulness of others, and asks others to take her answer answerless, if an answer is not required. We all know that “Empty Vessels make the most noise” and that Salford’s Labour and the Tory Councillors are devoid of any sound policies and so make much ado about nothing! They’ve had their chance! It’s about time brain cells and common sense were implanted in the Council Chamber in the form of Mary Ferrer rather than another sycophantic gravy-trainer!

In answer to question 1) I challenged the stopping of funding to Salford Women's center in full council (minuted) I also had debates with Councillors and officers.I was on the front line when we held a demo outside the Civic,the first night of the pink ice-rink (remember that total waste of our money) And up to this moment in time, Salford Women's center is still going,now stronger and stronger.
2) if you want to look up the minutes of any full council meeting from June 2006 to May 2010 you can see,first I attended most of these meetings.you will also see during those years,I didn't do the crosswords,read the daily telegraph,play on my phone or laptop.What I did do was stand up and challenge decisions that would be detrimental to the people of salford.I have carried on challenging the decisions made by this Council at community committees and on social media. May I ask you,where could I check your history of community involvement. I would need your NAME to do this. I was also on the planning committee,please feel free to check the minutes.I was also very vocal on there. I also sat on the licensing committee. Sorry,same there. I do have a bit of a habit to ASKING questions and CHALLENGE decisions. And sorry to disappoint, lm not an in the closet Tory. |

| I witnessed posts from Ray last night and he appears to have either something against Mary Ferrer or has an obsession in finding any posts or comments made by her or others and then gets his back up and makes very bad negative feedback. That had nothing to do with my breeding or education.Think it's called passion.Some of the wild things Salford Labour party do makes my blood boil.Yes I don't have much time for our Labour Council or labour in general. Don't think a Stadium or a prestigious Garden in leafy Worsley is high on the must have list.Services to the young,old disabled and needy should and must come first.I wish our Council would stop trying to sell all these hair brain schemes with the promise of JOBS.How many did we get from Media city 24/25. Hi Readers,
I’ve not had much opportunity to write recently, commenting on what is happening in Salford’s dynamic ever-changing politico/fashion events.
You see, Matron turned off Internet access at my residence at the privately run “Swinton Maximum Security Twilight Home for Active Aged”. I’ve now learned the art of “Piggybacking” onto the wifi of the buses that trundle past my window!
Other good news too! The Police were compelled to give me back the keys to my mobility scooter, following a Ruling by the European Court of Justice, pursuant to a misunderstanding by Salford’s Very Own Fashionista Councillor who complained that I was stalking him every time he came out of the “Swinton Maximum Security Twilight Home for Acquiescent Old Councillors” a.k.a. Salford Civic Centre. I could not help it if my scooter’s steering stuck, causing me to collide with him on five consecutive days!
Anyway, that’s enough of my personal woes etc. But, dear Reader, you might ask yourself, why am I outside the Civic Centre so often? Well, I am practically invisible to the Councillors – like most of the population of Salford - and consequently they are not as discreet as they would be if I was a 22 year old water-phobic, sporting a “Momentum” t-shirt, straggly hair and zits! And it’s amazing what I pick upon, hear and see!
Finally, the Claremont By Election has been called! Labour had held off calling it because their voters, supporters, members and workers were plainly exhausted by so many elections and referendum of the last 3 years! But the good news for Labour is that the Stoodents have returned from their homes and are back at Uni so they can now vote IN Salford.
Last Friday, whilst supping a cup of tea out of my thermos and sucking on a dunked rich tea biscuit, two badly disguised councillors, sporting flat hats, sunglasses and Gannex macs (sooo 1960s!!) scuttled over to the benches in the rose gardens. They were discussing who could stand for Labour in Claremont. They want someone who is too old to cause trouble in the Civic Centre, wears false teeth that need removing so s/he can speak, a bit deaf so s/he can answer the question s/he thought had been asked. They then fell into deep contemplative thought, stroking their chins. Evidently they couldn’t come up with an answer as the silence between them was deafening and long! They sighed and looked at each other, “Well, there’s always Mike Pevitt!!” and fell off the bench in paroxysms of laughter.
(Regular readers will know that Mike “Peripatetic” Pevitt stood in the Kersal By Election in March and triumphantly maintained his record there (and heavens knows where previously!), snatching defeat from the jaws of victory by losing what was considered a safe labour seat (like Claremont) to the Conservatives. Perhaps this was due to his comment of energising community spirit by advising voters whose dustbins were full to ask their neighbours if they could put their rubbish in their bins, following the introduction of 3 weekly black bins collections).
They quickly got back to reality and continued their conversation. “Well, “Peripatetic” Pevitt looks like one of us – similar dimensions and folliclely challenged – AND he is “flexible” too! – Just like our policy on Brexit!!” And we believe in open government, transparency and democracy too – just like Kim Jong Un. He believes in the precept of “One Man, One Vote”; he’s the one man and he has the vote!
We await the declaration of Candidates. But Labour’s U Turn on Brexit will have an effect on their vote, losing support from Labour Brexiteers as will the questionable stewardship of Salford Council’s (OUR) finances.
At least Mary Ferrer battles for Claremont and has been constant in her support and championing the needs of the Ward. True, she has been in different parties over the years, but she has maintained her principles and left those parties when a divergence has occurred; unlike many (but not all) Salford Labour councillors who dump and jump policies just for the vain glory of being a councillor and hang on to power and office.
As a supporter for many years of the Party of the People – Labour – I am finding it increasing difficult to support it any longer whilst it continues to embrace ever more vanity projects & politically-suicidal policies promulgated by former Militant and Socialist Worker factions that have emerged out of the woodwork, disguised as Momentum, such policies being embraced by “flexible” politicians frightened of deselection. I feel politically homeless and that is why I would be looking for an “honest” conviction politician to whom to lend my vote.

| Very sad that one of the really good guys, a lovely man and a great councillors has sadly passed. I knew joe for over 20 years professionally and he was always generous with his time and a great councillor who gave and had respect of his colleagues and residents, he will be missed, condolences to his family and especially to his son David who I played footy with as a teenager |
