Vanishing is the recently released album by Gareth Smith and co, coming out of Islington Mill and well in the Mill's tradition of experiential happenings. It's almost a never-to-be-made-film score that captures and explores a dystopian present and sinister Trumpian future, and has the brooding emotional feel of walking through that subway into Salford Precinct.
'...the bronze statue of an American Indian is leaning on a silver car...Its presence a mirage of uncomfortable edges, uncomfortable truths of vanishing tribes...his torso all scars of forged violent years...like a fish in a glass of a distractionary dream... somewhere on my hand is a cut I can't see...'
While the mood is dark, Vanishing, the combo, is going from strength to strength, despite only playing a handful of live dates so far, including gigs with Dean Blunt, LoneLady, Gnod and Surgeon. They have also collaborated on a record by Gazelle Twin, have a residency in Rotterdam later in the year and have been awarded Arts Council funding to write and perform a piece for Hull 2017.
On Thursday 31st August, Vanishing comes to the King's Arms for a seated live show, complete with projections and special lighting. It should be one immersive experience...Don't expect to see Ed Sheeran, Jose Mourinho and Paul Mason in the audience...but do expect something well out of the ordinary.
