Today, second in the table Salford took on the once mighty, now wilting, Warrington at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. After all the emotions of Friday's game I was expecting a very hard match. In the event, Salford stormed it 38-12. With the backing of thousands of noisy fans and one dancing mascot, Salford took the game to Warrington.
For the first 15 minutes, however, it was a real arm wrestle and could have gone either way. Salford held out on the own line, making sixteen tackles on the trot. What defence this was, the best I have ever seen.
After this hard shift, Robert Lui worked his magic and Jake Bibby went over in the corner. Then Todd Carney, straight from the kick off, went on a forty yard break to send Niall Evalds over in the corner; both brilliantly kicked by Gaz O'Brien to put Salford 12-0 up. It was all Salford, battering the Warrington.
On 22 minutes, the crowd all clapped in unison for the Manchester 22, and, while this was going on, more pressure by Salford resulted in Junior Sa'u going over in the corner. Kicked by O'Brien, it was now Salford 18 Warrington 0.
Ten minutes before half time, Warrington sneaked a try by the side of the Salford post but on the stroke of half time, brilliant work by Lui and Ben Murdoch-Masila resulted in Sa'u going in for his brace. Half time: Salford 22 Warrington 6.
Evalds was next to score for Salford, after another brilliant break by Sa'u, right in the corner but too far out for O'Brien to kick. Ten minutes later, Evalds went in for a hat trick after a top break by Lui, who was outstanding. Salford 32 Warrington 6.
A few dubious calls by the ref gave Warrington some hope, and with 15 to go, they went in at the corner, making their total 12. With ten minutes to go, Lama Tasi took out Stefan Ratchford with a brilliant hit, as we wondered if he had any ribs left. Meanwhile, after a 40/20 by Gaz O'Brien, Kris Brining went over, making the final score Salford 38 Warrington 12.
This could be the best ever season in the history of Salford RLFC, and I am glad I have seen it because I won't be going if the club changes the name...
Meanwhile, the Cadishead Rhinos completed their eight mile sponsored walk from Salford to Warrington's stadium, in a bid to raise money for a new club house. Stars of the day were Finley Guard and Ryan Coates who made it the whole way at just 5 and 7 years old...
