This Friday, 12th May, MSc Event students from the University of Salford are holding a Dirty Old Town Festival to celebrate Salford's cultural influence, and to try and bring students and the community together...
"We're trying to get people to express their experiences of life, work and study in Salford through art and culture" explains Iain Earle, who, a few years ago, helped put on the Lifting The Lid Festival while working at Ordsall Community Arts (see here).
"The Festival aims to reach out to students and the local community, so that students understand the rich cultural oasis they live in, and people in the communities realise that the University is there and growing, and looking to reach out with its events" he adds.
Featured in the Dirty Old Town Festival will be music from The Vangalis, Troy Faid, Goldtones and Salford City Singers, with comedy from Lewis Costello and a screening of A Taste of Honey. Barton Theatre Company will also be performing excerpts from The Thrill of Love, the Ruth Ellis drama which is running at Barton Theatre 18th-20th May.
With more acts to be confirmed and a few open slots left* it promises to be a full afternoon and evening of Salford style culture, with all proceeds going to Salford children's cancer charity Kidscan and OXFAM, via its festie wing OXJAM
"It's been a really exciting project to work on" says Iain "Hopefully the University will carry on with it, and it will become an annual festival. Everyone is certainly very keen..."
