Tomorrow, Monday 20th February, is the United Nations World Day of Social Justice, and, for 24 hours, people will be celebrating the contribution that migrants make to the UK.
"I love this job because I love making a difference to people's lives on a daily basis and especially the elderly who need our care and support" says migrant NHS senior physio, Anand Kumar, in a video posted on Twitter. Anand has worked in a trauma and orthopaedic ward for five years helping patients who have fractures or need hip and knee replacements.
The day of action is called by One Day Without Us, and aims to draw attention to the positive role that migrants play in society. They are doing this in all sorts of different ways, from taking the day off work to show the hole that would be left if they weren't around, to wearing badges, posting on social media or holding lunch time rallies.
Salford people will be heading to Manchester, where there's a lunchtime rally in Piccadilly Gardens at 12:30pm, with a photo at 1pm which will be shared around the world...
"Local groups will be bringing a creative, participatory display into the heart of Manchester city to raise awareness about the racism confronting migrants and asylum seekers, support their local campaigns and celebrate them as part of our community" state the organisers "Whatever your nationality and place of origin; wherever you live and work, join us..."
The day is also being backed by the campaign group The 3 Million, which stands up for the three million EU citizens living in the UK...
"The three million EU citizens who live in the UK are not a commodity to be traded at the Brexit table" states the group "We are not 'negotiating capital' either. This is because the UK is our home.
"We call on the Government to unilaterally guarantee the rights of EU nationals in the UK post-Brexit" it adds "...Assurances are not enough. They do little to change the uncertain and bleak future faced by many of us in the wake of the referendum and forthcoming Brexit. The anguish and long-term stress that this is causing to individuals and families are immense.
"These EU citizens came to the UK in good faith and they have made their home here" the group explains "They contribute on every level and in every sector of British society."
Tomorrow is also the day that Parliament will be debating whether or not to allow Donald Trump a state visit, prompting protests across the country. Organised by Stand Up To Trump Manchester and supported by Stand Up To Racism Manchester, plus a host of other organisations, there's a rally in Albert Square, Manchester from 6pm.
