Smut Slam is the wonderfully filthy creation of Cameryn Moore, an award-winning playwright, performer, sex activist and former phone sex operator. It originated in Boston in 2011, became established in Montreal that same year and has since travelled the world and has been well received with sell out shows ranging from events in America to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
This Tuesday, 31st January, will witness Salford's first ever Smut Slam. It's a sex themed, and downright dirty night with contributions from regular Smut Slammers and an open mic for bawdy story tellers and comics. Expect a fast-paced evening of smutty storytelling based on real life, real lust and real sex.
There is a growing interest in poetry slams in the region and recently a handful of story slams have also emerged. But now, the ante has been well and truly upped with Smut Slam. Enticingly billed as a collision between sex and storytelling, it's certain to set pulses racing.
There has been nothing quite like Smut Slam before and now, after an appearance down south, it rises like an erection and finds its way to Salford. It promises to be an exciting and salacious live event that is not for the faint-hearted.
"It's not a performance, in any real sense of the word" explains Cameryn "It's a community endeavour that everyone in the room helps to create, even if they don't go up and tell a story themselves...The tellers? Well, they are wonderful, brave souls. And we are all in it together.
"The highlight of just about every Smut Slam is seeing people up at the mic who weren't planning to go up there" she adds "In fact, they will say right there on the mic `I don't know why I got into this' - but they did, and so these audience members forge ahead with their stories and they invariably come through the other side somehow changed for having shared something honest and vulnerable with strangers."
Cameryn informs how educational the Smut Slams can be and has elected to pass on some of this new knowledge to the Salford Star...
* It doesn't mean anything if your orgasm sounds like your mother's, except probably the walls are too thin.
* Icy hot rub should never be used for hand jobs, no matter how adventurous you think you are.
* Just about any sexual challenge can be handled with enough patience, communication, and/or lube.
Fittingly, the theme for this debut Smut Slam is 'Firsts'. Expect plenty of awkward, embarrassing and comedic confessions. The Smut Slam features true, first-person sex stories and guest stories from a panel of celebrity judges. Another interesting aspect of the evening is gloriously named Fuckbucket...
"The listeners are actively listening, and responding, and sharing their own truths anonymously through the Fuckbucket" states Cameryn "The Fuckbucket is a convenient and appropriately named receptacle for anonymous questions and curiosities."
Smut Slammers can sign up on the night to tell a five-minute dirty story, based on their own experiences. A celebrity judge panel will be on hand to select winners and present them with sexy prizes. The lucky winners will be proud recipients of special prize packages that have been known to include curious items such as NJOY stainless-steel toys.
I have to ask Cameryn how much of her own genuine sexual experiences she shares whilst hosting Smut Slam... "I start every slam with a story of my own, and I can be pretty graphic" she says, offering a frank example "The first time I had sex on a train, I ruined a perfectly good dildo..."
If you are not ready to divulge details of your own sordid conquests don't worry, you can simply enjoy the voyeuristic ride. The audience is always guaranteed a humorous and insightful time at Smut Slam.
