Protests outside the Dogs4Us store on Agecroft Road are growing in frequency. Following a Boycott Dogs4Us protest just before Christmas, where a giant puppy held a sign insisting `I am not a present...I have feelings too' (see here), an organisation called Save Our Pups is mounting another campaign event next Sunday, 22nd January.
The controversial store is accused of selling dogs from puppy farms, where, Save Our Pups states, "The puppies are dragged away from mum under the age of eight weeks too young under UK law and transported hundreds of miles to be sold on again to other sellers
"The mothers and fathers of the puppies are still trapped in a world of abuse back at the `commercial breeding premises' also known as puppy farms" it adds "The welfare for the breeding bitches and fathers and puppies is totally disregarded. Pet shop puppies are bred on a mass scale, one breeding bitch can produce £5,000 per year of puppies so 120 breeding bitches makes the greedy breeders £600,000 per year with no regard for the dogs welfare at all.
"The puppies suffer lifelong physical and psychological issues because of their start in life" it explains "There is legislation in place but it cannot be enforced because authorities are struggling to keep up..."
Salford City Council, the authority responsible for regulating Dogs4Us, held a consultation on toughening up its policy on pet shops which ended in October (see here). The results are still awaited...
