Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the tenth annual Salford Star Mary Burns Awards, which are given out to honour the most deserving individuals and organisations in the city for their stupid statements, dodgy dealings and iffy activities over the past twelve months.

This year, the special George Bush Read My Lips Awards has, for the first time, joint winners. All had their tongues well up Ye Olde Nelson pub, demolished after promises to save it. So ladies and gentlemen, pull your pints of lies and give up your heritage for our three winners – Hazel Blears, the ECf's Phil Mayall and Councillor Derek Antrobus!!!

GEORGE BUSH `READ MY LIPS' AWARD

Goes to...

HAZEL BLEARS, PHIL MAYALL AND COUNCILLOR DEREK ANTROBUS

Yes, George Bush senior will forever go down in history as one lying little US President, who told the American people there would be `no new taxes' – "read my lips" - and then, lo and behold, new taxes were imposed. This is the oldest category of the Mary Burns Awards and there's never been a shortage of nominees or worthy winners – the Salford Council Leader and Salford Mayor have won a good few between them...

This year, however, for the first time, we have joint winners, all of whom uttered assurance that the distinctive and Salford listed Ye Olde Nelson pub on Chapel Street would be saved...

Originally dating from 1805, the Nelson Tavern was named after Lord Nelson who died at Trafalgar that year. It was re-built in 1899, opened in 1905 and closed for good in 2002 but was always a distinctive landmark.

First up we had the then Salford MP, Hazel Blears, standing outside the pub around eight years ago declaring... "Alongside the vital demolition work necessary to make the area safe, historic buildings and public spaces such as Ye Olde Nelson and Bexley Square will be revitalized and brought back into active use."

Councillor Derek Antrobus, head of planning for Salford Council, added: "Good planning means mixing the old with the new. It is essential that we preserve as many historic buildings as possible in the Chapel Street area. Our partners are making a good start in a transformation that will celebrate the old but also bring in a new, vibrant quarter."

As recently as 2013, Phil Mayall, head of the English Cities Fund (ECf), which is leading the `redevelopment' of Chapel Street, insisted; "We aim to demolish the buildings next to the Nelson. We have spent a time and money on an engineer and established it is structurally separate from the properties next door. At this stage we do not know how it will be developed but it will be retained, cleaned up, and made safe and secure."

Solid words from our regeneration leaders, we're sure you would agree...and then, in June, the bulldozers moved in on Ye Olde Nelson, after Salford City Council had sneaked the trashing order through a `delegated decision' without it going before any planning panel so the public could object. Phil Mayall's name was on the demolition notice.

So, ladies and gentlemen, please tease your wrecking balls, tickle your Trafalgars and salute the end of heritage honesty, for the winners of this year's Salford Star Mary Burns George Bush `Read My Lips' Award...

Part Time Socialist Retired, your recollectiona of Salford's Past Glories are at the same time beguiling, quixotic and mythological; pace they don't exist! If as you maintain there was a Golden Age of Civic Salford why was it deemed necessary to engage in large scale slum clearance in the 1950's/60's? By 1960 Salford was clearly exhibiting clear symptoms of Social and Economic Decline; Thatcher ism in the eighties delivered the knock out blow, destruction of what remained of the Industrial Base and the castration of Local Government! There are though glimmers of hope for the future; Salford's Population is now growing again, the steady accretion of economic/technological muscle located around Media City / Salford Quays and from the ashes of brexit there may emerge, in the near future, a Radical Left Government ! Bloody hell,I must have ruffled someone's feathers.Heritage and Salford Labour run council don't really go hand in hand.For a start we haven't had a heritage officer for some years. Remember when we did and I was on the planning panel,they never invited him to attend when issues within a conservation area or listed builds were on the agenda. So we couldn't ask question or ask for his thoughts on the matter.We have lost so much and are still loosing what bit of history we have left.We nearly lost the Height cottages,because Salford council couldn't be bothered to find a builder to do a back to back deal. It took one phone call and a very public meeting,that the council didn't want to take place. Just look at our Charles Barry building in Buile Hill park. Tinned up for 16 years.Our labour run council refused to work with a group of people to apply for outside funding. This took place at a public meeting,where I was told to go and do it myself.Yes someone give me the wrecking ball and I would gladly sick it right up Antrobus,s arse,along with Lancaster. There are a lot of people in Salford who do care about our history and heritage,its a pity most of our Councillors don't. Sorry if I offend,but what is happening to my city makes me so mad.

Ray of sunshine coming from Manchester you would be allowed to be forgiven when it comes to heritage. What do we see has heritage? our past the beautiful traditional buildings built by craftsman. a feeling of community sprit where people watched over each other where people were born and died with a feeling of belonging not torn from their homes under the Tory Jackboot masquerading has bedroom tax. A place where there was strife and illness but where people worked to conquer their hardships, people from other countries pay hard cash to see tradition, the past the buildings what can we offer in Salford bugger all it's all been pulled down to house speculators, media workers and people buying houses to aspire to nothing for the flat cap and dripping folk you seem to take us for, I understand Steve as a Mag to write and likes to hear people views shame though we have to listen to people like you that gain pleasure in attacking people like Mary someone who did work hard for Salford and you?

As a Mancunian Interloper in Salford, my hair stands on my head when charlatans such as Ferrer bang on about Salford's Heritage. Perhaps you could enlighten me and the users of this local news portal on exactly what constitutes the essence of Salford's Heritage? Is it "Rickets","The Means Test" or could it be "bread and dripping for breakfast,tea and dinner".

@rayofbullshit or should I say labour councillor, mary with a number of other opposition councillors tried to stop what was going on in salford by this incompetent labour council, but when the people of salford keep blindly voting parisitic labour in and remember labour control all panels in the town hall, then how can people like mary stop what is going on in salford, when people in salford are only interested in reality TV and benifits.the people of salford are voting for their own demise, salford is to become the new London and in London there are very few true Londoners left. Labour are cleansing salford, of salford people.

Perhaps you should look more closely at her time on the planning committee she worked tirelessly in her role as opposition member, the sad reality when you are fighting whipped Labour members on mass and a Labour chair what would you have expected? Sadly people like you don't have a clue on the reality of the governances and workings of a left wing controlled council in the pockets of multi nationals. Our Heritage has been ripped apart money wasted weak council members unwilling to fight to gain the affordable homes and services we need , for what? the progress of the balance sheets of speculators and shysters.

In reply to Rayofsunshine - Many people know that Mary Ferrer worked very hard with the campaign to save The Height Cottages, plus the Conservation Areas at King Street/Queen Street/Claremont Road and Radcliffe Park Road/Light Oaks Park. And much much more. I'm sure she didn't mean to offend anyone by her 'swear word' - best to focus on everything she has got RIGHT (which is a lot!)

With sad loss of my Father (92) this Boxing Day, a great man I shared happy times with in Doncaster, I thank all for your kind wishes during his last days. While I move back to Doncaster I assure you I will keep to his wish that I fight on for communities. I will miss Salford but I will seek Doncaster Mayoral 2017 UKIP pitch that Dad supported. RIP Bernard.

This is an absolute disgrace, lies lies and more dishonesty this famous pub was always on our list of pub crawls with its horseshoe bar! It's a crime and these people should be held accountable hopefully the people of Salford will have had enough of these selfish lying councillors who have been in too long and care for public wishes - really upset about this

I know where I would like to stick the wrecking ball, right up Councillor Antrobus ar-e. He will be remembered as the man who helped with the removal of our history and heritage. I think it is quite clear by now you can't believe a word that comes out of his mouth or any member of the council. It will only get worse.they have been allowed the freedom to walk over each and everyone of us,for far too long.

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.
