SALFORD COUNCIL SCHOOLS MESS

Star date: 18th November 2009

£140,000 TO SORT SALFORD'S SCHOOLS OUT!

The Council can't close St George's and don't seem to be able to add up when it comes to the other Salford schools, so what does it do now? Yep, chuck around £140,000 at the problem by employing outside consultants to clear up the cack…

Full story here…

Following the fiasco where the Schools Adjudicator went against Salford Council's plans to shut St George's… and following increasing recognition in the city that the Council can't add up when it comes to reorganising all the schools…what does it do?

Yep, it appoints four outside consultants to "advise the City Council on the future organisation of its schools" at a cost "no greater than £140,000".

The decision, still to be rubber stamped by the Lead Member for Children's Services, will stagger anyone who has been following the constant calamity which has seen potty plans for the merger of Moorside and Swinton High Schools to create a new school for 1350 pupils when the actual number on the register when it opens will be over 1650…and the new Wheatersfield Primary and Langworthy Primary being built too small for pupil numbers…plus the whole mess with the Catholic schools…it goes on and on and on…

The original plans for the future of Salford's schools were drawn up with the help of outside consultants Capita Symonds and Capita Children's Services. A Council Report from the time noted that it could save money by cutting school places… "the ability to generate additional local revenue by generating greater efficiencies through a well managed (sic) reduction in surplus places is a real possibility and a goal which we must strive for…"

Everything has been going so well that the Council obviously needs to chuck £140,000 at some more outside consultants. All of which begs the question as to what the Council's own highly paid Children's Services executives are doing all day. Well we know that one's suspended and one's retired, so what are the rest doing - picking their nose at the back of the class? Sneaking off behind the bike sheds for a fag? They're certainly wagging maths lessons...

You can keep your £140,000 – here's some advice for free…

* 1+1= 2

I have a valid suggestion for the Education Department. Firstly, Don't run alongside your collegues in Development Services - I know they hold the maps, but it doesn't give them the right to run roughshod over schools unless the conditions set by the local community. Secondly, If they cant prove their worth, Send the Consultants Packing. Leave Decisions on Schools to the Governors and Heads of those schools Resist the temptation to create over-inflated schools Oh, and if working schools are doing well - dont interfere! (I know i've said something like this before but hey - I'll keep on saying it till councillors and heads of ed start listening!)

SALFORD COUNCILLORS COULD BE CUT IN BOUNDARY COMMISSION REVIEW

NUMBER OF COUNCILLORS COULD BE CULLED IN REVIEW OF WARDS

The number of Salford councillors could be cut in a sweeping review of the city by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England..."The review will re-draw ward boundaries across the city as well as deciding how many councillors should be elected to the council in total" said a spokesperson for the Commission.

Salford currently has three councillors per ward but, with new wards possibly emerging as the city grows, this might be cut to two per ward.

AS £5.5MILLION AVOIDED BY DEVELOPERS SALFORD MAYOR SAYS IT'S A 'MYTH'!

In the latest issue of Salford Council's propaganda mag, Life in Salford, Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, has denounced the "myth" that "developers don't contribute money to the city. It's simply not true" he says.

Yes, they do contribute some money but they also avoid millions of pounds in payments and provision of affordable housing. Indeed, Salford Star analysis shows that developers avoided almost £5.5million in payments last year, as the Mayor only tells half the truth.
