We're sat in the cafe bar at The Angel Centre, off Chapel Street, and Sharon Hooley is telling us all about how she's going to get her head shaved next Friday to raise money for her friend Samantha Deakin's campaign to raise awareness for a new type of treatment for a little known cancer.
"Samantha has basically survived cancer twice in the last 18 months, although she's still going through different treatments at The Christie" says Sharon "She's been through a lot, braved through a lot...It's peritoneal cancer, one of the worst types, and it's a miracle she's got through it.
"They've managed to take out organs that she can live without but there are areas that they can't take out, and have used this new treatment, HIPEC, so that it hopefully won't spread any further" she explains "It's all brand new treatment that no-one knows about and peritoneal cancer is not widely known. So what she's doing is raising money to set up a new charity within Christie's to help acknowledge this and get it around the country, to try and get this treatment because it will save an awful lot of lives."
Samantha originally had a target of £1,000 but this has now been upped to £1,500 as friends have rallied around putting on tea parties to raise much needed funds. Sharon is to have her head shaved this Friday, 21st October at Supercuts in the Arndale Centre where her hair dresser is doing it for free and she hopes to draw a crowd for support.
"Although mine is just a head shave it is a little more complicated because I have psoriasis" she explains "I'm covered in it and so is my head, so when I get it shaved I'm going to be showing all my psoriasis, so it's a bit more personal getting it done. But it's worth it for my friend, and I wanted the JustGiving page to be through her name. Luckily I do have fast growing hair, a nice little wig ready and lots of hats..."
