GORDON STREET THROWS A PARTY AS CASH FOR KIDS WINNERS

Despite bearing the brunt of the Boxing Day Flood, the incredible residents of Gordon Street in Lower Broughton raised over £3,000 for charity, winning the Key 103 Cash for Kids Happy Street competition. Today a huge party was thrown at River View Primary School fields to celebrate.

"I wanted to win it for Lower Broughton and Salford for the things that we've been through over the last eight months with the floods..." said local mum Keri Muldoon.

Batman, Pepper Pig and a Minion appeared on the playing fields of River View Primary School, as part of a huge party for two hundred residents who helped raise just under £3,200 for charity, winning Key 103's Cash for Kids Happy Street competition.

The area around Gordon Street in Lower Broughton was one of the worst hit in the Boxing Day Flood, with up to two feet of water gushing through people's houses as the River Irwell burst its banks. Despite their own hardship, the community banded together to raise more money than any other street in Greater Manchester.

Today they were rewarded with the ultimate street party with free cakes, pizzas and drinks, as well as lots of entertainment ranging from a Punch and Judy Show to a bucking bronco ride, bouncy castles, face painting and even a visit from Greater Manchester Police exhibiting their riot shields and shaking hands with Batman.

"We had twenty days to get as much cash as we could for Cash For Kids and we did bag packs, bacon butty mornings, bingo nights, football cards, raffles and everything we could" said Gordon Street's Keri Muldoon, who was presented with the winners' plaque

"I wanted to win it for Lower Broughton and Salford, for the things that we've been through over the last eight months with the floods" she added "Now, flood-wise all the properties are mostly dried and sorted and this is a bit of a special ending for us all. These people deserve a bit of an upbring and this is like a pat on the back for everyone. We've all got to start again but we're Salford, we're strong and this is us..."

Broughton councillors Charlie McIntyre and Jim King were also present...

"I was delighted to hear Keri say that everything is nearly sorted out with regards to the floods, and I hope that the Environment Agency will get their act together quickly with the delayed report and produce a factual analysis that we'd all welcome" said Councillor King "But we're here today to enjoy the event...and well done to Keri and the residents."
