Six months ago, the Government was mulling over the £7billion cost of tarting up the House of Commons, the House of Lords, Big Ben et al when an official UK Government and Parliament petition was launched to scrap them and re-build everything on Salford Quays...
"The Government is proposing to spend £7bn refurbishing a crumbling, antiquated Parliament in central London which is difficult to get to from the rest of the UK" stated the petition "Salford is in the geographical centre of the UK, less than one mile from the UK Motorway system and with excellent public transport links.
"This is an opportunity to have a 21st Century purpose built Parliament as they have in Scotland and Wales" it added "Land is available by the Manchester Ship Canal and Government offices could be built on the Industrial Estate in Trafford Park. The cost could be covered by selling Government offices in Whitehall. There is an excellent local source of unskilled labour for the project when under construction and in use. Local leisure facilities are excellent with many hotels, restaurants and bars nearby."
The petition closed on August 2nd after six months but, unfortunately, only 22 people agreed that it was a good idea and signed up. For the government to respond to a petition it needs 100,000 signatures. So it doesn't look like it's going to happen...
Shame really, because it would have been interesting to see how MPs and Lords coped with the swearing ban in force on the Quays.
What next? A petition to move Buckingham Palace to Little Hulton to see how the Queen copes with Bedroom Tax on all those state funded empty bedrooms?
