SALFORD DEATH CAFE TO OPEN IN SEPTEMBER

Star date: 7th August 2016

BLUE LOTUS DEATH CAFE OPENS AT THE ANGEL

The first `death cafe' for Manchester and Salford opens on September 2nd at the Angel Centre off Chapel Street.

The Blue Lotus Death Cafe is not for those who have been bereaved but "for people who have been given the dreadful news of having a terminal illness" says founder Mandi Weston "It's for the people who have to deal with the news and maybe want, or need to speak about it".

Full details here....

It might sound grim but the Blue Lotus Death Cafe could be just what people need at the worst time of their lives. To be held on the first and third Friday of every month at the Angel Community Centre, off Chapel Street, with the first meeting on Friday 2nd September, it is not for those who have been bereaved but for people who have been given their life expectancy and want to share their feelings with others.

"It is the first group in the Salford/Manchester area for people whom have been give the dreadful news of having a terminal illness" explains founder, Mandi Weston "As we all know, people tend to brush the subject under the carpet. It's for the people who have to deal with the news and maybe want, or need to speak about it.

"They 'want' to discuss what they wishes are, what their fears are, or even maybe just have a laugh about what the future has dealt them" she adds "We all shy away from the subject until it's too late. So, this is a group for people who want to come together and maybe have a 'to do' list or just talk about their fears with people that are in the same situation. It is not a bereavement group, it's an informal group where people can have a chat, a cup of tea and a piece of cake; and, maybe even in the future, organise meals, or drinks out."

Had some good exchanges with Reg, always a tonic to challenge the mind. Please let me add on a personal note both my parents died of Cancer within the same year. The support for family was none existent over in Doncaster. Mandi and The Angel are giving Salford the unique opportunity to become the caring city.

Certainly a great cause and seems to be exactly the kind of local initiative that we're told Devo Manc will be supporting. Perhaps a Devo Manc supporter could enlighten us as to how funding can be applied for?

As a man who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, I feel that I am entitled to comment on this issue and, whilst in the past, I have crossed swords with Michael on many issues, on this I must agree with him and say that funding for this project should be found.it is easy for people to make pe43rsonal remarks about people who write on this site ,but, perhaps if they directed some of their sarcastic comments to the relevant departments then, maybe such worthy projects as this could function easier. Good luck Mandy, and I hope that I will see your project up and running, but only god knows that.

Hi Wrote and the other writer. Be sure my demands do go to the appropriate person. I want to come back to the article here and without further ado I urge local people to spread the word about this honorable cafe initiative. Let's help friends find helping services as offered by the Angel Cafe's excellent support.

Mr Felse makes more demands than Peppa Pig. Let's make him GM mayor and see how many demands he puts into action. As a comited Labour voter can he tell me why he attacks Labour and not the local Tories. Or is Felse another closeted conservative?

Interesting idea! @Greater Manchester Mayor I demand that you ban Mr Felse from making pointless demands!! I wonder how many of his demands he actually puts onto paper or email to the relevant people? I suspect none....too busy demanding on here!!!

I was just doing my daily check of comment sections to see if anyone made any demands of me (plainly the best way to contact a mayor) and shall get on it pronto.

Thank you Mandi for making this happen. I fully support the idea. I demand the Greater Manchester Mayor puts money into such great groups as The Angel and links in actions such as a total Greater Manchester ban on building over graveyards, funerals free of Council fees in all Greater Manchester, £120,000 from the Greater Manchester Mayor £140million budget to go into each of the 10 local authorities for food bank local produce and matching pound for pound each of the 10 Mayors' Annual charity appeals.

I agree that we all need to talk about death and dying freely and make it a normal part of life. Death cafes are usually open to all who want to talk about death and dying openly. How come this is only available to people with a terminal illness? Let's all talk about it, before it's too late!

Fantastic idea! Death is so classed as morbid yet it is undoubtedly part of life. We all need to talk about it more particularly those who are terminal can now find people who don't mind talking about death. Well done Mandi Weston for seeing past societies perceptions.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
